Chapter 1 - The Veils of Innocence

The silence inside the master suite of the Fifth Avenue penthouse was absolute, broken only by the quiet hum of the central climate control and the distant, muffled whisper of Manhattan traffic below.

Niko Santoro stood four feet away, his dark jacket tossed casually over the back of an armchair. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the sharp, muscular line of his neck and the edge of a dark tattoo crawling beneath his collarbone.

His dark gray eyes, usually as impenetrable as polished granite, scanned my face with sudden, intense scrutiny.

"You aren't what I expected," Niko said softly, his deep voice carrying a rasp of genuine confusion.

I didn't step back. I kept my chin lifted, my hands loosely folded over the front of my silk bridal robe. "What did you expect, Niko? The wild heiress from the tabloid covers? The girl who dances on tables in Soho and crashes luxury convertibles?"

"I expected a woman who understood the transaction," Niko replied, taking one slow, deliberate step toward me. His tall, broad frame cast a towering shadow across the plush silk rug. "Your father sold you to settle a debt, Evelyn. He traded your hand to secure the Santoro family's political endorsement for his gubernatorial campaign—and to bury a corruption scandal that would have sent him to a federal penitentiary for the rest of his life."

The breath caught in my throat. I felt a sharp, bitter coldness bloom in my chest. A debt. A scandal. My father hadn't married me off out of fear for my safety; he had traded me to protect his own skin.

"I didn't know," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

Niko stopped inches away from me. The faint scent of cedarwood, expensive leather, and dark whiskey surrounded him. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently taking my jaw. His touch was surprisingly light, devoid of the harshness I had prepared myself to endure.

He tilted my face toward the dim lamplight, his eyes searching my expression with ruthless precision. He saw the genuine shock in my eyes, the raw vulnerability I couldn't hide, and the total absence of the practiced, artificial charm he had anticipated.

"You've never been with a man," Niko stated quietly. It wasn't a question. It was a realization that shattered every assumption he had carried into this room.

I swallowed hard, refusing to drop my gaze. "The tabloids made up the stories, Niko. My father's public relations team leaked those party photos for years to cover up his political meetings. I was always surrounded by security. I spent my nights studying in my room while the press painted me as a socialite."

Niko released my jaw, his thumb brushing over my lower lip in a slow, hypnotic gesture that sent a jolt of electricity straight down my spine.

"Your father lied to me," Niko murmured, his jaw clenching as a dark, dangerous fire flickered in his eyes. "He sold me a spoiled party girl who wouldn't care about a marriage of convenience. He gave me an innocent."

"Does that change anything for you?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Niko unbuttoned his cuffs, turning his back to me as he walked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Central Park.

"It changes everything, Evelyn," Niko said coldly, staring out into the night. "Because I don't break fragile things. Sleep in the bed. I'll take the sofa in the study."

Before I could answer, he walked out of the bedroom, slamming the heavy mahogany door behind him.
