Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Courtroom

The formal custody hearing was set for the second week of April at the Cook County Family Courthouse.

The legal battle had escalated into a full-scale war. Richard Sterling’s corporate empire had been dismantled by my financial counter-attacks, but in his desperation, he had aligned himself with Vanessa Vance’s high-powered defense attorneys.

Together, they had launched a massive media smear campaign against me.

Local news outlets were running sensationalized headlines: “Former Private Military Contractor Illegally Retains Vance Multi-Million Dollar Heirs,” and “Is Ryker Steel Protecting the Orphans or Chasing the Forty-Two Million Dollar Trust?”

When our motorcade pulled up to the courthouse steps at 9:00 a.m., a wall of reporters, cameramen, and protestors was waiting behind steel barricades. Flashbulbs went off like strobe lights as Marco opened the door of my armored limousine.

I stepped out first, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my dark hair slicked back, my expression an impenetrable mask of absolute authority.

Then, I reached back into the car and lifted Owen out, while Evelyn walked beside Lily, shielding her from the flashing lights.

“Mr. Steel!” a reporter yelled, shoving a microphone toward us over a guard rail. “Are you holding the children to gain leverage over the Vance Family Trust?!”

I stopped.

I turned my head and looked directly into the camera lens of the primary news network.

“I have forty times the net worth of the Vance trust,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the noisy street. “I don't give a damn about the money. I care about the children. And anyone who tries to hurt them will answer to me.”

I turned and walked up the stone steps, leaving the press corps in dead silence.

Inside Courtroom 402, the air was thick with tension.

Judge Sarah Jenkins—a tough, no-nonsense family court judge with twenty years on the bench—sat at the high dais.

To our left sat Vanessa Vance, wearing a demure grey dress, her face devoid of makeup, looking like a grieving stepmother unfairly accused. Beside her sat her defense attorney, Howard Vance (no relation), a slime-ball litigator known for getting high-profile criminals off on technicalities.

To our right sat Evelyn Vance, Marco, and myself, with Owen and Lily sitting quietly between us at the counsel table.

“This court is now in session regarding the matter of temporary and permanent guardianship of Owen and Lily Vance,” Judge Jenkins announced, striking her gavel once. “Mr. Vance, you may present your motion.”

Howard Vance stood up, buttoning his jacket, and turned toward the judge with an expression of practiced outrage.

“Your Honor,” Howard began smoothly. “What we are witnessing today is a travesty of justice. Mr. Ryker Steel—a man with deep ties to international private security forces, a man who commands armed mercenaries—has taken physical possession of two vulnerable orphans. He has barred their loving stepmother, Mrs. Vanessa Vance, from seeing them, and he refuses to surrender them to state authorities!”

He gestured dramatically toward Vanessa, who promptly squeezed out a tiny, tragic tear and dabbed her eye with a tissue.

“My client suffered a momentary mental breakdown following her husband’s tragic death,” Howard continued. “She made a desperate mistake at the airport due to severe grief and exhaustion. But she loves these children! She is their rightful, legal guardian, and she is prepared to take them home today!”

Judge Jenkins looked down at Evelyn. “Ms. Vance, your response?”

Evelyn stood up calmly, smoothing her skirt. She didn't look at Howard. She looked directly at the judge.

“Your Honor,” Evelyn said, her voice resonant and completely composed. “We do not need dramatic speeches. We have facts.”

Evelyn tapped a button on her tablet. The giant video monitors mounted on the courtroom walls flickered to life.

Audio played through the courtroom speakers—a crystal-clear recording recovered from Vanessa’s encrypted phone logs by my tech team three days prior.

“...I don't care where you drop them, Richard,” Vanessa’s voice echoed sharply through the room. “Just make sure they aren't found until the probate court signs off on the trust transfer. Once the forty-two million clears, you get your twenty percent cut, and I fly to Monaco.”

The courtroom erupted into instant chaos.

Reporters in the gallery began frantically typing on their phones. Vanessa’s face turned an ugly, ghostly shade of green as she whirled around to glare at her lawyer.

Judge Jenkins banged her gavel repeatedly. “Order! Order in this court!”

When quiet was restored, Judge Jenkins stared down at Vanessa Vance with a cold, terrifying fury.

“Mrs. Vance,” Judge Jenkins said, her voice trembling with indignation. “You are remanded into immediate custody of the state without bail pending formal charges of attempted human trafficking and conspiracy to commit fraud.”

Two bailiffs stepped forward immediately, grabbing Vanessa by the arms and snapping heavy handcuffs onto her wrists.

“No! This is a setup! Ryker Steel forged that audio!” Vanessa shrieked, kicking and flailing as she was dragged toward the holding cells. “You can’t do this to me! Those kids belong to me!”

As she was pulled past our table, she caught sight of Lily looking at her. Vanessa stopped, her eyes wild with rage. “You little brat! You ruined everything!”

Lily didn't flinch. She didn't hide behind me.

She stood up, held onto my hand with unwavering confidence, and looked her former tormentor straight in the eye.

“Goodbye, Vanessa,” Lily said softly.

The gallery broke into hushed applause as the heavy metal doors slammed shut behind the disgraced stepmother.

Judge Jenkins adjusted her glasses, took a deep breath, and turned her gaze toward me, Owen, and Lily.

“Mr. Steel,” the judge said, her tone softening considerably. “The state of Illinois owes you a debt of gratitude for saving these children from a terrible fate. However, the question of permanent legal guardianship remains. What is your intention regarding Owen and Lily Vance?”

I stood up, adjusting my jacket. I looked down at the two small children standing beside me—the children who had entered my life as forgotten castaways on a cold airport bench.

“Your Honor,” I said clearly, my voice carrying through the silent courtroom. “My intention is to legally adopt Owen and Lily Vance. I intend to give them my name, my home, and my protection for the rest of my life.”

Judge Jenkins looked at Owen. “Owen, do you know what adoption means?”

Owen looked up at me, then looked back at the judge. A small, genuine smile—the first true smile I had ever seen on his face—illuminated his features.

“It means Ryker is our dad now,” Owen said. “And nobody can ever leave us behind again.”

May you like

Judge Jenkins smiled, her eyes glistening with tears as she raised her gavel.

“Motion granted,” she declared, striking the wood. “Full, permanent legal guardianship and emergency adoption authorization granted to Ryker Steel.”
