Chapter 6 - The Crooked Pharmacy

The town of Gary, Indiana, was cold and bleak under the heavy winter rain. The corporate address for Aegis Digital Pharmaceuticals was located in a low-rent industrial park near the steel mills, a single-story brick building with blacked-out windows and a rusty security gate.

When three unmarked police cruisers and a federal transport van pulled into the cracked asphalt parking lot at 2:00 p.m., the front glass door was locked. But the federal agents didn't knock. They used a hydraulic ram to take the door off its hinges with a deafening boom that echoed through the empty lobby.

Inside, the facility didn't look like a real pharmacy; it looked like a high-volume shipping warehouse for illicit substances. Stacks of unmarked white pill bottles lined the metal shelves, and four digital label printers were running continuously, spitting out forged prescription slips bearing the names of doctors who had been dead for years.

A fat, balding man in a white lab coat was standing near the back shipping counter, frantically trying to stuff a pile of hard drives into an industrial shredder.

"Step away from the machine, Dr. Miller," Agent Jenkins shouted, her service weapon raised and locked onto his chest. "Hands where I can see them!"

Dr. Miller froze, his face turning a pasty, translucent white as he dropped the hard drives onto the concrete floor. "I’m just a pharmacist! I just fill the orders that come through the server! I don't know who the patients are!"

I walked into the warehouse, the heels of my black leather boots crunching over the broken glass from the front door. I stopped less than two feet from him, looking at the dirty label printers.

"You filled the order for Claire Mercer on December 18th, Dr. Miller," I said, my voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that made his eyes widen with terror. "You substituted her low-dose beta-blocker with a lethal batch of verapamil. You received a wire transfer of eighty-five thousand dollars from an offshore account in the Caymans twenty minutes after the shipment cleared the regional hub."

"It was an administrative error!" he stammered, his hands shaking violently as the agents grabbed his arms. "The database had a routing glitch! It wasn't intentional!"

"We pulled the digital chat logs from your private server an hour ago, Doctor," I said, pointing to the laptop Marcus Vale had already accessed remotely. "You texted Daniel Mercer: 'The package is clean. It’ll pass the initial screening. Make sure the body is gone before the week is out.' That’s not a glitch, Doctor. That’s an admission of conspiracy to commit murder with malice aforethought."

As they dragged him out into the cold rain, his white lab coat dragging in the mud, I looked down at the empty shelves. The supply chain of poison that had taken my daughter’s life had been severed at the root. The net was complete, the accomplices were in chains, and the retired prosecutor had finally cleared the calendar.
