CHAPTER 3 — “The Clinic Record That Was Never Supposed to Exist”

The question didn’t hang in the air.

It sank into it.

“Have you undergone any fertility treatments in the last six months?”

Dr. Robles repeated it more gently this time, as if softening the edges might make it less dangerous.

But Brooke didn’t move.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t breathe properly.

Trevor noticed.

Of course he did.

Because men like him always notice the exact second control starts slipping.

“What fertility treatments?” he said immediately, turning toward her. “Brooke… what is she talking about?”

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. “Oh my God.”

Brooke’s fingers tightened against the edge of the exam table until her knuckles turned pale.

“I didn’t—” she started.

But the words collapsed before they formed.

Dr. Robles stepped closer to the computer again, her expression now completely focused.

“I’m accessing your full reproductive history from affiliated networks,” she said quietly.

Trevor snapped. “You don’t have consent for that.”

The doctor didn’t look at him.

“I have medical authorization under continuity of care.”

A pause.

Then she added, colder:

“And suspicion of misinformation affecting patient safety.”

Brooke swallowed hard. “Doctor… please.”

The screen changed.

A loading icon appeared.

Then a second file opened.

And Dr. Robles stopped moving entirely.

“That’s… not possible,” she murmured.

Trevor leaned forward. “What is it?”

But the doctor didn’t answer him.

She turned the monitor slightly away from everyone else for a moment, reading carefully.

Then her eyes lifted.

Slow.

Controlled.

Directly to Brooke.

“Mrs. Vance,” she said quietly, “this record was flagged for non-disclosure.”

Brooke felt her blood drain. “What record?”

Dr. Robles hesitated.

Then rotated the screen back toward them.

A clinic header appeared:

HARRINGTON REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE CENTER

Trevor frowned. “We’ve never been there.”

But Brooke’s breath caught.

Because she had.

Dr. Robles continued.

“This indicates you underwent an oocyte retrieval cycle five months ago.”

Silence.

Then Trevor barked a laugh. “A what?”

Chloe blinked. “That sounds like IVF.”

Brooke’s lips parted. “No…”

But Dr. Robles didn’t stop.

“And embryo cryopreservation was performed.”

Trevor turned sharply toward Brooke. “You did IVF without telling me?”

“I didn’t—” she whispered. “I didn’t do anything like that—”

But even as she said it, her voice sounded uncertain.

Because she remembered the consultation.

The fatigue.

The appointments she told herself were “just tests.”

The clinic that told her everything looked “routine.”

Except nothing about it had felt routine at the time.

Dr. Robles tapped the screen again.

“And here,” she said, “is the transfer record.”

Brooke stepped forward without thinking.

And then froze.

Because there was a date.

Stamped clearly.

Four months ago.

Long before the vasectomy.

Long before the accusations.

Long before everything collapsed.

Trevor saw it too.

His face changed instantly.

“No,” he said sharply. “That’s forged. She didn’t do IVF. She didn’t—”

But Chloe grabbed his arm suddenly.

“Trevor,” she whispered. “Look at the physician ID.”

He did.

And stopped.

Because the signature belonged to a doctor they both knew.

Dr. Eleanor Hayes.

The same specialist Trevor had insisted Brooke see “for routine fertility evaluation.”

Chloe’s voice dropped. “That’s your doctor.”

Trevor shook his head fast. “That doesn’t mean anything. She could’ve—records can be manipulated—”

Dr. Robles interrupted.

“They can,” she said. “But not across three independent systems simultaneously.”

She turned the screen again.

“This record exists in hospital archives, insurance billing systems, and pharmacy logs.”

A pause.

Then:

“All consistent.”

Brooke whispered, “So I… did IVF?”

Dr. Robles looked at her carefully.

“Yes.”

A beat.

“And more importantly… you completed embryo transfer.”

Trevor stepped back slightly.

“No,” he said again, quieter now. “No, she would’ve told me. She would’ve needed my consent.”

Dr. Robles shook her head.

“Not necessarily.”

She looked at Brooke.

“This clinic is known for utilizing stored gametes in pre-authorized legal agreements.”

Chloe’s voice rose. “So you’re saying she signed something she doesn’t remember?”

But Dr. Robles didn’t confirm or deny.

Instead, she said something worse.

“I’m saying there is a legal document tied to your name, Mrs. Vance, authorizing reproductive procedures without direct spousal confirmation.”

Brooke’s knees weakened.

“I didn’t sign that,” she whispered.

Trevor stepped forward immediately. “She’s lying. This is a setup.”

But Dr. Robles finally turned toward him fully.

And when she spoke, her voice was no longer neutral.

It was sharp.

Controlled anger.

“Mr. Vance,” she said, “your wife’s medical file shows no evidence of coercion in these procedures.”

A pause.

Then she added:

“But it does show repeated appointments where you were marked as ‘declined participant.’”

Silence.

Trevor froze.

Chloe looked between them. “What does that mean?”

Brooke’s voice trembled.

“It means… he wasn’t there.”

Trevor snapped instantly. “Because I was working! Because I had meetings! I told you I was busy!”

Dr. Robles nodded once.

“Yes,” she said calmly.

Then she added:

“And according to your wife’s records, you were informed of each stage.”

Trevor hesitated.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But it was enough.

Brooke saw it.

“So you did know,” she whispered.

“No,” Trevor said immediately. “I didn’t—”

But the confidence was gone now.

Chloe stepped back from him.

And that movement said more than words ever could.

Dr. Robles closed the file gently.

Then spoke one final time.

“There is one more anomaly.”

Brooke looked up weakly. “What now?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then said:

“The embryo implanted does not correspond to any recorded genetic sample from Mr. Vance.”

Trevor’s voice cracked instantly.

“What are you saying?”

Dr. Robles looked at him.

And answered simply:

“I am saying the biological father of this pregnancy… does not match your assumed paternity.”

The room exploded into silence.

Not shock.

Not disbelief.

Something heavier.

Collapse.

Brooke’s hand went to her stomach instinctively.

Chloe stared at Trevor like she was seeing him for the first time.

And Trevor—Trevor didn’t speak.

He couldn’t.

Because the one thing he had built his entire accusation on…

Had just been erased.

Dr. Robles lowered her voice slightly.

“But the records also show something else.”

A pause.

Then:

“This embryo was not randomly selected.”

Brooke whispered, “What do you mean?”

The doctor looked at her directly.

“It was chosen.”

And then—

A final line that froze everything:

“From a donor profile linked to your husband’s own fertility preservation record.”

Trevor went completely still.

Because in that moment—

He understood.

May you like

Someone hadn’t just betrayed him.

Someone had planned this entire story around him.
