Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over the hills of San Diego, bathing the Callahan-Vale estate in warm, golden light.

Emma sat at the kitchen counter of their home, wearing a soft white sweater, reading through the monthly patient reports from the foundation. Outside the window, Grace was playing fetch with a golden retriever puppy on the lush green lawn, her laughter drifting through the open window.

Dominic walked into the kitchen from his morning run, wiping his forehead with a towel. He stepped up behind Emma, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You're working early," Dominic murmured, kissing her cheek.

"Just approving three new therapy grants for kids in South San Diego," Emma said, leaning her head back against his chest. "We reached our thousandth patient milestone yesterday, Dominic."

Dominic smiled, holding her close. "My mother would have loved you, Emma. She would have been so proud of everything you’ve done."

"We did it together," Emma reminded him gently, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his waist. "We built a home where people don't have to beg for help."

A soft knock sounded at the front door.

Marcus walked into the hallway, holding a delivery box. "Mrs. Vale," Marcus said with a warm smile—a title he used with immense respect. "A package just arrived from the court archive office."

Emma opened the box. Inside was a framed copy of the original 1998 employment record of Dominic’s mother, officially cleared of all false charges by the Illinois State Board, along with a letter of formal apology from the Lake Shore Country Club.

Dominic looked down at the document, his dark eyes misting over with quiet emotion. He picked up the frame, holding it carefully, as if it were made of delicate glass.

"It’s completely clean now, Dominic," Emma said softy, taking his hand. "Your family name is whole."

Dominic looked at his wife, pulling her into his arms and holding her tight against his heart.

"It was always clean, Emma," Dominic whispered. "I just needed you to show me how to see it."
