Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Hand

The Cook County Family Court was crowded with reporters when Reed, Lilian, and Mara Chen arrived on Tuesday morning. Flashbulbs went off continuously as they walked down the marble corridor, Lilian leaning heavily on her silver cane, her head held high despite the whispers of the crowd.
Inside the courtroom, Vanessa sat at the petitioner’s table, looking elegant and fragile in a modest navy blue suit. Her eyes were downcast, her tissue held ready in her hand, the picture of a devastated mother fighting for her children. Beside her sat Julian Vance, a silver-haired man with sharp, predatory eyes and a tailored suit that cost more than most people earned in a year.
"Your Honor," Julian Vance began, his voice booming through the chamber as he addressed Judge Margaret Ross. "We are here on an emergency basis because the environment at the Harrington estate has become toxic and dangerous for two innocent infants. My client, Vanessa Harrington, was brutally turned out of her own home in the middle of the night by a husband who has demonstrated severe emotional instability and a history of controlling behavior."
He slid a folder toward the bench. "We have submitted affidavits from medical professionals suggesting that the paternal grandmother, Lilian Harrington, suffers from advanced cognitive decline and physical instability, rendering her an active hazard to newborns. Yet, Mr. Harrington has insisted on placing these infants in her care while he works twelve-hour days at his corporate headquarters."
Judge Ross, a veteran jurist known for her strict adherence to evidence, looked over her glasses at Mara Chen. "Ms. Chen, how does the respondent answer these allegations? The video submitted by the petitioner does show a concerning level of confusion from the grandmother."
Mara stood up, her posture perfectly straight. "Your Honor, the video submitted by the petitioner is a fraudulent piece of digital manipulation, edited to distort a medical emergency that the petitioner herself caused. We would like to introduce our first witness: Dr. Elena Carter, the head of neurology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital."
Vanessa’s hand twitched slightly on the table, her eyes narrowing as Dr. Carter stepped up to the witness stand.
"Dr. Carter," Mara said, stepping toward the podium. "You conducted a full forensic medical evaluation of Lilian Harrington yesterday afternoon. Can you tell the court what you found regarding her alleged cognitive decline?"
"Lilian Harrington shows absolutely no signs of dementia or advanced cognitive decline," Dr. Carter stated clearly, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "What she does show, however, are severe markers of physical trauma and medication withholding. When she was admitted to our clinic, her blood panels revealed a near-zero level of her prescribed arthritis and blood pressure medication. Furthermore, she had deep contusions along her lumbar spine and shoulders consistent with heavy, prolonged pressure—such as being forced to carry a heavy weight while on her knees."
A low murmur ran through the gallery. Judge Ross leaned forward, her expression hardening. "Dr. Carter, are you suggesting that the grandmother was physically abused?"

"I am stating it as a medical fact, Your Honor," Dr. Carter replied. "The bruising on her spine matches the exact dimensions of a dual-child carrier strap. If a woman with her level of advanced osteoarthritis was forced to carry two fifteen-pound infants while crawling on a tile floor, it would cause exactly the type of soft-tissue damage we documented."
Reed looked over at Vanessa. The fragile, tearful mask had slipped for a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, calculating look of pure survival. She whispered something into Julian Vance’s ear, and the silver-haired lawyer immediately stood up to object.
