Chapter 6 - THE SILENT POISON

In the weeks following the Winter Gala, the city bore the illusion of peace, but beneath the surface, the Castiglione syndicate was rotting from within. With Don Castiglione’s reputation shattered and his top enforcers eliminated, his territory began to fragment. Dominic moved swiftly, absorbing shipping routes and securing the city's board members with absolute precision.

Yet, inside the Volkov estate, a quieter and far more insidious danger began to brew.

Madame Elena Volkov had watched Emma’s rise with bitter humiliation. The old matriarch refused to accept that a former waitress—a girl with no lineage or political backing—held more sway over Dominic than the family line. Unable to break Emma publicly, Elena turned to shadows.

It started with subtle, creeping exhaustion. Emma began experiencing dizzy spells and deep, bone-weary fatigue that no amount of sleep could fix. At first, she dismissed it as the lingering stress of her injuries and the endless demands of learning to manage the syndicate’s charitable foundations. But when a wave of nausea forced her to leave a high-stakes meeting with the waterfront union leaders, Dominic’s patience snapped.

He summoned the family’s elite private physician to the master suite. The diagnosis was shocking: a rare, tasteless toxin derived from nightshade was accumulating in Emma's bloodstream—administered in microscopic doses over weeks.

Dominic’s rage was a silent, terrifying storm. He locked down the estate within thirty seconds, ordering Victor to test every food item, medicine, and tea leaf in the mansion. The source was discovered quickly: Emma’s afternoon porcelain tea set, prepared exclusively under Madame Elena’s personal orders.

When Dominic confronted his grandmother in the grand parlor, he did not raise his voice. He stood towering over her, his eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying coldness. He stripped Elena of all family privileges, seized her accounts, and banished her permanently to a guarded estate in the northern wilderness.

"You are my blood, Grandmother," Dominic whispered, his voice cutting through her terrified protests. "And that is the only reason you are still breathing. If you ever speak my wife's name again, even the wilderness will not hide you."

Dominic rushed back to the master suite, where Emma lay pale against the silk pillows, the antidote flowing through her IV line. He sank to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in her hands, his broad shoulders trembling with a rare, desperate vulnerability. For the first time, the feared mob boss wept—not for his empire, but for the woman who had become his entire world.
