Chapter 4 - Sunrise Reckoning

The morning sun had barely broken over the horizon when Chad pulled his red sports car into the parking lot of the Wake County Register of Deeds office. It was 8:15 AM. The building wouldn't open its doors to the public until 9:00 AM, but Chad wanted to be first in line. He sat in the driver’s seat, clutching a thick manila envelope containing the Cayman Islands transfer documents, sipping a lukewarm latte, and grinning to himself.
"Just forty-five more minutes," Chad muttered, checking his diamond-encrusted watch. "Then three hundred and fifty grand clears, and I’m on a flight to Cabo."
He leaned back, closing his eyes, enjoying the thrill of what he thought was a flawless victory.
Suddenly, a heavy black SUV pulled into the parking space directly in front of him, blocking his car completely. Before Chad could even register what was happening, a second police cruiser pulled up behind him, trapping his vehicle in a tight pincer movement.
Chad’s heart plummeted into his stomach. He scrambled to grab the manila envelope, intending to shove it under his seat, but before he could move, his driver-side door was yanked open.
"Chad Miller!" a stern voice barked.
Marcus Vance stood there, flanked by two armed deputy sheriffs. Marcus held a signed judicial warrant in his hand.
"Get out of the vehicle! Hands where we can see them!" Marcus commanded.
"What is this?!" Chad shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. "You can't touch me! I’m just waiting for the clerk’s office to open! I haven't done anything illegal!"
"You're under arrest pursuant to an emergency bench warrant issued by the Superior Court of North Carolina," Marcus said coldly, grabbing Chad by his arm and pulling him roughly out of the car. The deputies forced Chad against the hood of his sports car, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place.
"This is harassment! My lawyer, Richard Sterling, will destroy you for this!" Chad screamed, struggling against the metal cuffs.
Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. Daniel stepped out from the passenger side, holding a folder containing the signed court orders. He walked slowly toward Chad, his expression cool, composed, and utterly terrifying.
"I’m afraid Mr. Sterling won't be able to represent you today, Chad," Daniel said smoothly, stopping a foot away from the panicked young man.
"What are you talking about?!" Chad spat, sweat glistening on his forehead.
"Mr. Sterling was taken into custody at his home forty-five minutes ago," Daniel explained, pulling a document from his folder and holding it up so Chad could see it. "And this is a retroactive suspension of his notary commission. Every single document he notarized for you, Evan, and Marissa is legally null and void. Apex Holdings never held title to my mother-in-law’s home. The Cayman Islands transfer you hold in that folder is worthless paper."
Chad stared at the document, his eyes wide with horror as the complete collapse of his scheme dawned on him. "No... no, that’s impossible! Sterling said... Sterling said the offshore trust was bulletproof!"
"Nothing is bulletproof against the law when you build it on a foundation of theft and elder abuse," Daniel said softly. "The hard-money lender has already been served with a federal freeze order. They are surrendering the mortgage notes back to the court. You, Evan, Marissa, and Sterling are going to face trial together for conspiracy, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"Please!" Chad suddenly began to sob, his bravado instantly evaporating. "It wasn't my idea! It was Marissa and Evan! They came to me! They said the old woman was dying anyway and that the money would just go to hospital bills! I was just helping them move the funds! I didn't know she was being left on the street!"
"Save it for the judge," Marcus said, shoving Chad into the back of the police cruiser and slamming the door shut.
I stepped out of the sedan and stood beside Daniel, watching as the cruiser drove away, its red and blue lights flashing against the morning sky. The cool morning breeze blew past us, carrying away the lingering smell of exhaust and fear.
"Is it over?" I asked, leaning my head against Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel put his arm around me, kissing the top of my head. "The criminal side is just beginning for them, Sarah. They’re going to be locked away for a very long time. But for your mother? The nightmare ends today."
At 9:00 AM sharp, the doors of the Register of Deeds opened. Daniel, Marcus, and I walked inside. Ten minutes later, with the court order in hand, the county clerk executed an emergency Cancellation of Fraudulent Deed, officially reinstating my mother, Eleanor Miller, as the sole, unencumbered owner of her beloved home.

When we walked back out into the bright morning sunlight, Daniel handed me the original deed, newly stamped with the official seal of the state of North Carolina.
"Let’s go bring your mother home," he said with a warm, genuine smile.
