Chapter 10 - The Quiet Accounting

Three years later, on a quiet October evening, the porch at the harbor cottage was peaceful.

The autumn air smelled of salt, woodsmoke, and dry pine needles.

Sitting in the wooden rocking chair near the door was my mother, holding a two-year-old boy with dark curls and bright hazel eyes.

His name was Thomas Mercer.

Beside them sat Clara, her laptop open on her knees, reviewing a grant application for the regional elder advocacy clinic that had just expanded its services across three states.

I stood by the railing, holding a glass of apple cider, watching the red beacon of the harbor lighthouse flash its steady, rhythmic signal against the darkening sky.

Every six seconds: flash... flash... steady.

My mother looked down at the sleeping boy in her arms, running her fingers softly through his curls.

“Danny,” she murmured, her voice quiet so as not to wake the child.

I turned around, leaning my back against the wooden railing. “Yes, Mom?”

“Do you ever think about them?” she asked softly. “Rachel? Vance?”

I looked at the calm, dark horizon where the ocean met the sky.

Rachel was still serving her sentence at the state facility in Framingham. Her third appeal had been denied six months ago. Cole was working on a state road crew in the western part of the county, his driver’s license permanently revoked. Vance’s medical license had been destroyed, his name erased from every board and hospital registry in the state.

“No, Mom,” I said gently, walking over and kneeling beside her chair, resting my hand over her knee. “I don't think about them at all.”

Clara reached out from her chair, taking my hand into hers, her fingers warm, strong, and steady.

“The ledger is balanced, Daniel,” Clara said softly, looking into my eyes with a smile that held everything I had ever fought to protect.

The harbor light flashed once more—a clear, bright beacon cutting through the dark ocean air, guiding the ships safely home to the quiet harbor where the water was deep, clean, and still.
