CHAPTER 7 — THE LINE THEY CROSSED TOO FAR
By noon, CPS arrived.
Not to remove Laya.
To investigate.
And that alone told Scott everything had escalated beyond personal conflict.
Someone had turned his daughter into a case file.
Marlene sat perfectly composed during questioning.
Doug spoke carefully.
They framed everything as misunderstanding.
Stress.
Emotional exaggeration.
Scott watched it like watching someone describe a fire as “slightly warm air movement.”
Then the social worker asked:
“Did you receive explicit medical instructions?”
Scott handed over the note.
The red circle again.
The words again.
The silence after reading it again.
Marlene finally broke.
“She was fine when we left.”
Scott turned to her.
“She wasn’t fine when I found her.”
A pause.
“She wasn’t fine when she couldn’t breathe.”
A longer pause.
“And she wasn’t fine when you decided steak mattered more than her lungs.”
That was the moment CPS shifted tone.
Not dramatic.
