Chapter 4 - The Midnight Heist

The clock on the library mantle chimed eleven times as the heavy iron gates of the Graves estate opened once more, allowing two dark armored SUVs to vanish into the rain-drenched night.

Inside the mansion, the quiet was almost deafening. Martha had prepared a warm bowl of chicken soup and a plate of golden toasted sandwiches for me in the small dining room adjoining the kitchen. I sat at the edge of a chair that felt far too soft, swinging my worn sneakers back and forth, listening to the rain lash against the tall glass windows.

"Eat up, child," Martha said gently, placing a cup of hot chocolate with tiny floating marshmallows beside my plate. "You're safe here now. Nobody can hurt you or your mother in this house."

I picked up my spoon, taking a small sip of the warm broth. "Martha?"

"Yes, little miss?"

"Why did my mom never tell me about this place?" I asked, looking up at the high decorative ceiling. "We lived in a place where the heat didn't work in the winter. Mom used to wrap me in three blankets and sit by the open oven just to keep my fingers warm. If she had a father who lived in a palace... why didn't she come back?"

Martha stopped wiping the granite counter, her eyes clouding over with sadness. She walked over and sat down in the chair beside me, her soft, aged hands folding over mine.

"Because your mother loved her father more than she loved comfort, Ruby," Martha explained gently. "When bad men threatened to hurt Mr. Nathaniel, your mother knew that if she stayed, those men would use her to force your grandfather into terrible things. She sacrificed everything—her wealth, her comfort, her home—to keep him safe."

I looked down at the hot chocolate, watching the marshmallows slowly melt. "She was being honest... just like she taught me."

"Yes, dear," Martha whispered, smiling warmly. "Honesty and bravery are two sides of the same golden coin."

Suddenly, the lights in the dining room flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark.

The soft hum of the central heating system cut out, replaced by an eerie, total silence. A second later, the amber emergency backup lights clicked on, casting long, strange shadows across the hallway.

Martha stood up instantly, her body rigid. "Stay here, Ruby. Don't move."

She walked quickly to the wall terminal to check the security monitor, but before she could touch the screen, a low, metallic crunch echoed from the front driveway, followed by the muffled pop of bursting tires.

"Martha?" I called out, my heart dropping straight into my stomach.

The intercom on the wall buzzed frantically, and a security guard's panicked voice cut through the static: "Breach at the main gate! Power lines cut from the exterior grid! Security teams three and four, report to the south court—"

The guard's voice was abruptly cut off by a harsh burst of white noise.

"The basement," Martha gasped, grabbing my arm with surprising strength. "Ruby, we have to get to the panic room in the basement right now!"

She pulled me out of the dining room into the long marble hallway. The grand foyer was dimly lit by the eerie amber emergency lights. Outside, through the tall glass windows of the front entrance, I could see dark figures moving swiftly across the lawn, holding heavy tactical flashlights.

They weren't police officers. They weren't Nathaniel's guards.

Before we reached the door to the basement staircase, the heavy iron-reinforced front doors of the mansion buckled inward with a thunderous bang.

Two men dressed in dark tactical gear pushed through the door, their faces hidden behind black masks. Standing behind them, shaking rain off a fine cashmere overcoat and holding a silver-handled walking cane, was a broad-shouldered man with slicked-back gray hair and cold, pitiless blue eyes.

Arthur Mercer had not gone home to hide.

He had waited for Nathaniel to leave the estate, knowing the heavy security detail would go with him.

"Search the house," Arthur commanded his men, his voice echoing off the high marble walls like a hollow bell. "Find the child. If we have the girl, Nathaniel will sign anything I put in front of him before the sun comes up."
