Chapter 2 - The Bel-Air Bubble

While the storm was quietly gathering inside Warren Aldridge's study, five miles away, inside a seven-million-dollar modern villa in Bel-Air, my father, Richard, was pouring himself a glass of twenty-year-old single malt scotch.

The house was illuminated with soft, warm lighting. In the living room, Vanessa was sitting on a cream-colored velvet sofa, scrolling through a luxury real estate magazine, discussing the summer rental prices for a villa in Capri.

"Richard," Vanessa said in her sweet, practiced voice, not looking up from her tablet. "Julian says he needs another sixty thousand for the down payment on the new private yacht syndicate. Can we execute the secondary trust release early this quarter?"

Richard walked over to the fireplace, swirling his scotch. "We have to wait until the fifteen-day processing window opens, Vanessa. You know how strict my father's legal team is. Marcus Hale reviews the automated distributions every ninety days."

"Oh, please," Vanessa sneered lightly, waving her hand with dismissive grace. "Your father hasn't looked at an account statement in five years. He spends all his time hiding in his Pasadena mansion reminiscing about your dead mother. As long as we keep sending those fake receipts from the Irvine townhouse, no one asks questions."

"I still don't like using Emily's Social Security number for Julian's private accounts," Richard grumbled, though his tone held no real moral objection, only mild annoyance. "If the IRS flags the tax filings—"

"The IRS won't flag anything," Vanessa interrupted sharply, setting her tablet down. "Emily is a ghost, Richard. She's living in some homeless shelter or cheap apartment downtown. She doesn't file tax returns. She has no credit score. As far as the system is concerned, she doesn't exist except through the documents we generate."

She stood up, walking over to wrap her arms around Richard's neck.

"Think about it, darling," Vanessa purred. "If we hadn't taken that trust money, your father would have handed it directly to that ungrateful girl. She ran off with a deadbeat boyfriend, got pregnant out of wedlock, and humiliated your family name. We saved the Aldridge legacy from being wasted on a mistake."

Richard sighed, drinking his scotch, leaning into his wife's embrace. "I suppose you're right. I just wish she hadn't turned up at my office last year asking for money. It took two thousand dollars to pay off my secretary to tell her I was in Europe."

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door of the mansion rattled as someone punched the electronic keypad code incorrectly three times.

The door burst open.

Julian Vance tumbled into the grand foyer. He was wearing a high-end designer bomber jacket, his face pale, his forehead sweating profusely, holding his phone in his trembling hand.

"Mom! Richard!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with sheer panic.

Vanessa jumped back from Richard. "Julian! What is wrong with you? Why are you shouting like a street vagrant?"

"My card!" Julian gasped, breathing heavily as he stumbled into the living room. "My Black Card! I was at the dealership in Beverly Hills taking delivery of the new McLaren! The dealer ran the card, and it was declined! Not just declined—the system said 'Account Seized by Court Order'!"

Richard frowned, setting his glass on the mantelpiece. "That's impossible. That account is backed by the secondary family credit line. There’s a three-hundred-thousand-dollar limit."

"It's not just the credit card, Richard!" Julian screamed, holding out his phone. "Look at my banking app! My checking account, my trading portfolio, my company reserve—all of them say zero! The status says 'Frozen by Federal Injunction'!"

Richard pulled his own phone from his pocket. He tapped his banking app, entering his thumbprint scan.

Access Denied. Account Status: Restricted. Contact Legal Counsel.

Richard's heart gave a violent, sickening thump against his ribs. He tapped his private wealth manager's speed dial.

"Richard," the smooth voice of his bank vice president answered on the first ring, but the usual warmth was entirely gone. "I was just about to call you."

"David! What is going on with my accounts?!" Richard demanded, his voice rising in volume. "My son’s cards are being declined! My master accounts are locked!"

"Mr. Aldridge," the vice president said, his tone icy and formal. "At 3:45 P.M. today, Hale & Associates, acting on behalf of Mr. Warren Aldridge and the Master Aldridge Family Trust, filed an emergency petition in Los Angeles Superior Court."

"A petition?!" Richard stammered, looking at Vanessa, whose face was slowly draining of color. "On what grounds?!"

"Allegations of multi-year grand larceny, systematic identity theft, and trust fund embezzlement involving the sum of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars," the banker replied flatly. "A temporary restraining order has been issued freezing every single asset, real estate deed, bank account, and vehicle registration linked to you, Vanessa Aldridge, and Julian Vance."

"My father wouldn't do this!" Richard roared into the phone. "This is a mistake! My father loves me!"

"Your father was the one who signed the affidavit, Mr. Aldridge," the banker said before hanging up.

The phone line went dead.

The living room fell into a suffocating, terrifying silence.

Vanessa grabbed Richard’s arm, her long nails digging into his suit jacket so hard it tore the fabric. "Richard! What does this mean?! What did your father find out?!"

"I... I don't know," Richard stammered, his body beginning to shake violently. "He couldn't have found out! Emily is gone! She doesn't talk to anyone!"

Before Richard could take another breath, the brilliant red and blue flash of emergency vehicle lights swept through the sheer linen curtains of the living room windows.

Outside in the private driveway, four black unmarked SUVs and two LAPD patrol cars came to a screeching halt, blocking Richard’s leased Bentley and Julian’s Ferrari.

Armed officers in navy blue vests bearing the letters FBI stepped out of the vehicles, moving swiftly up the marble front steps.

The heavy front door was shaken by three thunderous knocks.

"Federal agents! Open the door!"

Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek, dropping her magazine onto the floor. Julian fell back onto the velvet sofa, hyperventilating, covering his face with his hands.

Richard stood frozen in the center of his seven-million-dollar living room, staring at the front door as it was kicked open by the federal team.

The bubble had burst.
