Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Mercer

The noon board meeting at the Newport Historical Foundation was legendary for its briefness.
According to reports Andrew received from his contacts inside the building, Vivienne Mercer had walked into the oak-paneled boardroom wearing her signature Chanel suit, her head held high, expecting to rally her loyal trustees.
She never got the chance to sit down.
The federal deputies were already waiting for her in the hallway.
They did not handcuff her in front of the board—out of respect for the historic building—but they escorted her down the grand marble staircase, past the portraits of Julian’s ancestors, and out into the snowy Newport afternoon.
By 2:00 PM, the news had hit the Boston and New York papers.
NEWPORT SOCIALITE ARRESTED FOR FEDERAL FRAUD IN CARROWAY ACQUISITION.
The articles were accompanied by photographs of Vivienne being led to a dark sedan, her face covered by a silk scarf. But the real shockwave came from the press release issued directly by Julian’s legal team.
It did not mention the family dispute. It did not mention the winter gala. It simply stated that Mr. Julian Mercer and his wife, Mara Bell-Mercer, had initiated a private audit that uncovered systemic corruption within the foundation’s leadership, and that they were fully cooperating with federal authorities to ensure the preservation of the Carroway collection for public use.
In the living room of the Cold Harbor cottage, Mara watched the television screen in silence.
The news felt distant now, like a storm howling outside a well-insulated house. The baby kicked gently against her ribs, as if agreeing that the air was finally clearing.
Naomi sat beside her, handing her a mug of hot chamomile tea. "How do you feel?"
"Light," Mara said, a soft smile touching her lips. "I feel like I can finally breathe without permission."
Julian came in from the kitchen, carrying a fresh log for the fire. He set it down, then sat on the rug at Mara's feet, resting his head against her knees.
"The board has voted to dissolve the Mercer Foundation," Julian said softly. "The assets will be transferred to the Boston Public Library and the state archives. The Newport mansion will be sold to pay the restitution fines."
He looked up at her, his eyes warm in the firelight. "We’re going to have to start over, Mara. My personal inheritance is safe, but the family name... it’s gone."
May you like
Mara reached down, her fingers running through his dark, wavy hair, resting on the back of his neck.
"We don't need their name, Julian," she said softly. "We have our own."
