Chapter 5 - The Call

The silence in the study was absolute as I dialed the number I had known by heart since I was five years old.

Every digit felt like a betrayal—not of Martin, but of myself. I was stepping back into the web, willingly putting myself in the sights of a man who had stolen my life.

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.

"Claire?" Martin’s voice exploded through the speaker, tight, frantic, and laced with a terrifying undercurrent of anger. "Claire, where the hell are you? Your mother is in the hospital! We’ve been worried to death!"

I took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing my voice to tremble, playing the part of the scared, confused daughter. "Dad... Dad, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Where are you, Claire?" he demanded, his detective voice taking over, sharp and commanding. "Tell me your location right now. I’ll come get you."

"I... I can't," I sniffled, squeezing my eyes shut. "Some people... some people approached me at the airport. An attorney named Margaret Shaw. They told me things, Dad. Terrifying things. They said I was adopted. They said... they said you took me from a car crash."

There was a sudden, dead silence on the other end of the line. The quiet was more terrifying than any shout. I could hear the faint, rhythmic beeping of hospital monitors in the background, then the sound of a heavy door closing as Martin walked into a private hallway.

"Claire," Martin said, his voice dropping to a low, soothing purr that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "Listen to me very carefully. Those people are scammers. They are trying to extort our family. They’ve been harassing your mother and me for weeks. They are dangerous criminals, sweetheart. You can't believe a word they say."

"They showed me a police report, Dad," I cried, letting the genuine tears of frustration and grief flow. "They showed me a picture of a baby. Natalie Pierce. Dad, is it true? Please tell me it’s not true."

"Where are you, Claire?" he repeated, his tone hardening slightly. "I need you to tell me where you are so I can protect you. They are manipulating you."

"I'm at the Seattle Public Library," I lied, using the location Daniel had mapped out for me. "The central branch downtown. I'm on the third floor, near the history section. I'm scared, Dad. There are men watching me."

"Stay right there," Martin said immediately. "Don't talk to anyone. Don't leave that floor. I am leaving the hospital right now. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes. I love you, Claire. Remember that. Everything I did, I did because I love you."

The line went dead.

I slowly lowered the phone, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps.

"He fell for it," Daniel said, checking his monitor. "The GPS on his vehicle is already moving. He’s leaving the Swedish Medical Center parking garage."

"Luis, go," Margaret ordered. "You and the medical proxy team have exactly twelve minutes to get to Elaine's room before Martin realizes he’s been duped. Get the confession, Luis. Do not let her stall."

"I'm going with you," Sarah said, standing up, her eyes burning with a fierce, quiet resolve. "I want to look the woman who stole my sister's baby in the eye."

"Sarah, it’s too risky—" Margaret began.

"She has my sister's blood on her hands, Margaret," Sarah said, her voice steady and unyielding. "I am going."
