Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing

The following afternoon, courtroom 402 of the Cook County Criminal Court was packed with reporters, local legal observers, and curious spectators.

News of the "Oak Brook Family Assault"—a wealthy suburban mother caught on high-definition camera violently beating her dying daughter in a hospital room over a $250,000 inheritance—had leaked to the press late the previous evening. The video clip had not been released publicly, but the description in the police report had sent shockwaves through the local community.

In the jury box sat three defendants in bright orange county jumpsuits, their hands and feet chained together.

Evelyn Whitaker looked unrecognizable. Her carefully coiffed hair was matted and wild, her makeup washed away, revealing deep, dark circles and sharp, bitter lines around her mouth. Richard sat beside her, staring blankly at the defense table, looking suddenly twenty years older. Connor was sobbing quietly, his shoulders shaking as he stared at his cuffed wrists.

Their defense attorney, Thomas Vance—Richard’s wealthy brother-in-law who specialized in white-collar tax law—stood at the podium, looking visibly flushed and sweating through his expensive suit.

"Your Honor," Thomas argued, addressing Judge Beatrice Vance. "My clients are pillar members of their community! Evelyn Whitaker has no prior criminal record! This was a tragic, emotionally charged family misunderstanding inside a high-stress medical environment. My client was overwhelmed by grief over her daughter's terminal condition!"

Judge Vance, an elderly African American woman with razor-sharp eyes and a reputation for showing zero tolerance for domestic violence, looked down from the bench over her half-moon glasses.

"Emotionally charged misunderstanding, Mr. Vance?" Judge Vance asked, her voice dripping with lethal sarcasm. "I have reviewed the state’s evidence. I have watched the video recording captured by the hospital room's security system."

Evelyn flinched violently at the bench, her head snapping up. "Video?!" she shrieked, forgetting where she was. "What video?! That’s illegal! She spied on us!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Silence in the court!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down, her eyes glaring directly at Evelyn. "One more outburst from you, Mrs. Whitaker, and I will cite you for criminal contempt on the spot."

Evelyn sank back into her seat, her lips trembling as she realized the horrifying truth: the camera had captured everything. There was no spinning it. There was no blaming the medication. There was no claiming self-defense.

"The video," Judge Vance continued, her voice echoing coldly through the courtroom, "shows a calculated, heartless, and brutally violent attempt to extort a critically ill young woman who was literally hooked to a dialysis machine. It shows Mrs. Whitaker yank heavy equipment from the wall and strike her daughter in the head. It shows Mr. Whitaker actively blocking the window so medical staff could not intervene. And it shows Mr. Connor Whitaker standing by, encouraging the coercion."

"Your Honor, please," Thomas begged, his voice trembling. "They are not a flight risk! Allow them bail so they can prepare their defense!"

"The victim in this case," Judge Vance declared, "is currently recovering from organ failure and surgical staples to her skull. The level of cold cruelty demonstrated by these defendants poses a clear and present danger to the victim and the community at large."

She tapped her stack of papers against the bench.

"As to Evelyn Whitaker: Bail is set at two million dollars, full cash bond. Should she somehow make bail, she is placed under strict electronic monitoring and a absolute zero-contact order regarding Maya Whitaker."

Evelyn gasped, choking on her breath. Two million dollars cash meant she would need two hundred thousand dollars non-refundable just for a bondsman—money she did not have.

"As to Richard Whitaker: Bail is set at one million dollars."

Richard dropped his head into his chained hands.

"As to Connor Whitaker: Bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars."

"No! No! Please!" Connor cried out, struggling against his chains as two county bailiffs stepped forward to escort them out. "Mom! Do something! Pay my bail! I can't stay in here! The guys in my cell are crazy!"

"I don't have the money, Connor!" Evelyn wailed, tears streaming down her face as she was dragged toward the holding cell doors. "Maya took everything! Maya ruined us!"

As the iron doors slammed shut behind them, echoing through the marble courtroom like a thunderclap, Marcus Sterling stood near the back of the gallery, holding his phone up.

He pressed end-record on his voice memo, tapped a button, and sent the audio file directly to Maya’s phone back at Lakefront Medical Center.

Underneath the file, Marcus typed a simple three-word text:

They are locked away.
