Chapter 3 - The King is Naked

The morning sun rose over the Chicago River, casting a brilliant gold light on the glass facade of the Core Dynamics headquarters. Julian Vance arrived at 7:30 AM, thirty minutes earlier than usual. His anger had kept him awake all night. He was dressed in his sharpest bespoke suit, his posture rigid with an explosive fury. He walked through the marble lobby, ignoring the polite nods of the reception staff, his mind focused entirely on destroying Madeline.
He took the private executive elevator to the 42nd floor, stepping out into the regional management suite. He intended to call the company’s chief legal officer into his office immediately to abuse his corporate status for his personal divorce.
But when he opened the door to his office, he stopped dead in his tracks.
His massive mahogany desk was not empty. Sitting around it were four individuals in dark, identical suits, laptops open, with stacks of financial ledgers piled high. Standing by the window, sipping a cup of black coffee, was Arthur Thorne—the global Chief Executive Officer of Core Dynamics.
Julian’s breath hitched. Arthur Thorne rarely left the corporate headquarters in New York unless something of cataclysmic proportions was occurring.
“Arthur!” Julian stammered, his arrogant demeanor instantly faltering into a desperate, sycophantic smile. “What an unexpected honor. I didn't know you were in Chicago. If I had known, I would have arranged a proper welcome luncheon.”
Arthur Thorne didn't smile. He didn't even turn away from the window immediately. When he finally did, his gaze was colder than the winter wind off Lake Michigan.
“Sit down, Julian,” Arthur said quietly.
Julian swallowed hard, moving toward the leather chair opposite his own desk, feeling incredibly out of place in his own office. “Arthur, what is going on here? Who are these people?”
“This is the internal forensic audit team from our parent conglomerate, Aurora Capital,” Arthur replied, gesturing to the auditors who didn't even look up from their screens. “We received a highly detailed anonymous compliance report over the weekend regarding systemic vendor overpayments, unapproved expense accounts, and suspicious secondary consulting fees originating from your regional office.”
Julian’s heart dropped into his stomach. A cold sweat broke out across his back. For the past two years, he had been subtly altering vendor invoices from a local construction firm, routing the excess "consulting fees" into a shell account to pay off Eleanor’s gambling debts and his own lavish lifestyle choices. He had convinced himself that his "genius" had hidden the paper trail perfectly.
“Arthur, that’s absurd!” Julian protested, his voice rising in panic. “An anonymous report? It’s probably a disgruntled employee! You know my record. I’ve brought in record profits for the central region. This office wouldn't last a single quarter without my leadership!”
Arthur Thorne let out a short, dark laugh that sounded terrifyingly familiar to the one Julian had used on me just twenty-four hours earlier.
“You really believe your own press releases, don't you, Julian?” Arthur said, walking over to the desk and leaning over it. “Let me tell you something about Core Dynamics. This company doesn't run on your genius. It runs on capital. Capital provided by our parent entity.”
One of the auditors looked up, turning her screen toward Julian. “Mr. Vance, we’ve already identified $412,000 in unvouched disbursements to an organization called 'EV Logistics.' Our initial check reveals the registered agent for EV Logistics is your mother, Eleanor Vance. Care to explain why a medical lifestyle consultant is receiving corporate infrastructure fees?”
Julian’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His mind was spinning wildly. How had they found it so fast? The audit had just begun. It was as if they knew exactly where to look, down to the specific line items and dates.
“This is a mistake,” Julian choked out. “I can explain. It was a temporary allocation—”
“Save it for the board, Julian,” Arthur Thorne interrupted, straightening his tie. “And for the authorities. Effective immediately, you are suspended from your position as Regional Director. Your corporate devices are confiscated, your access to the network is revoked, and security will escort you from the building.”
“You can't do this to me!” Julian screamed, standing up, his arrogance briefly flaring back into a toxic rage. “I have a contract! I have connections! I will sue this company into the ground!”
“You can try,” Arthur Thorne said calmly. “But I should inform you that the decision to audit and suspend you didn't come from me. It came directly from the majority shareholder of Aurora Capital. The person who actually owns the chair you’ve been sitting in.”
Julian frowned, his confusion momentarily overriding his fear. “The majority shareholder? Who the hell is it? Let me speak to them! I can convince them—”
“I don't think she wants to speak to you right now, Julian,” Arthur said, a look of profound satisfaction appearing on his face. “Last I heard, she was recovering from a broken leg at Northwestern Memorial.”
Julian froze. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. The air left his lungs in a sharp, painful gasp.

“What… what did you just say?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking entirely.
“Your wife, Madeline Brooks,” Arthur Thorne said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “She owns Core Dynamics, Julian. You’ve been working for her this entire time.”
