Chapter 7 - The Audit of Accountabilities

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news of the Four Seasons Gala scandal had exploded across national media outlets.

The Seattle Times ran a massive front-page headline: "NURSE FIRED BY HUSBAND TURNS OUT TO BE $450M HOSPITAL OWNER."

Local television networks broadcasted the footage of Marcus Whitaker being escorted out of the Four Seasons in handcuffs on a loop. Social media platforms were flooded with millions of messages celebrating Claire as a hero for healthcare workers across the country.

Inside the executive conference room on the top floor of Northlake Medical Center, the morning sun poured through the clean glass windows.

Claire sat at the head of the long marble table. She was dressed in a tailored navy suit, her hair neatly styled, looking every bit the formidable Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson she now was.

Seated around the table were the newly appointed executive leadership team: Dr. Arthur Montgomery as Chief Medical Officer, Nurse Emily as Chief Clinical Director, and Jonathan Reed as Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs.

"The internal audit is complete, Dr. Bennett," Jonathan reported, sliding a thick ledger across the marble table. "With Gregory Hayes cooperating fully with federal prosecutors to reduce his sentence, we have successfully frozen all offshore accounts. The four point two million dollars stolen from the foundation has been entirely recovered."

"And Marcus's personal assets?" Claire asked calmly.

"Because Marcus used hospital corporate lines of credit to secure his personal luxury automobile leases, purchase designer clothing, and fund his mother's luxury lifestyle, the trust has executed a full asset recovery clawback," Jonathan explained. "His bank accounts have been frozen under a court order. The prenuptial agreement he attempted to use against you has been invalidated due to his documented acts of corporate fraud."

"What about the house on Bainbridge Island?" Emily asked softly.

"The Bainbridge property was purchased entirely by William Bennett's estate thirty years ago," Jonathan smiled. "Marcus has been formally served with an emergency eviction notice. He has until 5:00 PM today to remove his personal belongings from the premises."

Claire looked out the window toward the hospital courtyard below. Patients were walking along the sunlit paths, nurses were smiling as they changed shifts, and the heavy atmosphere of fear and corporate intimidation that had hung over the facility for years had completely vanished.

"How are the staff responding to the new shifts, Emily?" Claire asked, turning to her friend.

"The morale is higher than I’ve ever seen it in my ten years here, Claire—sorry, Dr. Bennett," Emily caught herself, blushing slightly.

Claire laughed warmly. "Please, Emily, to you and the team, I am always Claire."

"Everyone is thrilled," Emily said, her eyes shining. "We restored the pediatric nursing staff levels, reinstated the full charity care budget, and the senior physicians have pledged to contribute personal hours to the community kidney clinic your father started."

A soft knock came at the conference room door.

Jonathan’s senior paralegal stepped inside, looking slightly uncomfortable. "Dr. Bennett... Marcus Whitaker is downstairs in the main lobby. He is demanding to see you. He refuses to leave until he speaks with you personally."

Dr. Montgomery frowned. "Shall I have security remove him?"

Claire stood up from her chair, smoothing her jacket. "No, Dr. Montgomery. Let him stay in the lobby. In fact... call the entire off-duty staff to the main atrium. It's time to close this ledger once and for all."
