Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

Christmas Eve, 2028.

The snow fell heavily and peacefully over Bayside, turning the grand estate on the hill into a scene straight out of a fairytale book.

Inside the grand living room, a massive fifteen-foot pine tree stood decorated in brilliant warm white lights, golden ribbons, and silver ornaments. A roaring fire crackled merrily in the large stone fireplace, casting a rich, amber glow across the plush sofas, the hardwood floors, and the warm wool carpets.

Soft, classical Christmas carols played gently from hidden speakers, filling the home with peace and warmth.

At seven years old, Lily sat on the soft carpet near the tree, wearing a red velvet Christmas dress, happily unwrapping a large box filled with art supplies, storybooks, and a wooden dollhouse.

Beside her on the sofa sat Emily, looking stunning in a dark green velvet maternity gown that gently hugged her rounded stomach—she was six months pregnant with their second child, a little boy.

David sat beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, his large hand resting gently over her swollen stomach, feeling the soft, rhythmic kicks of his unborn son.

"He’s active tonight," David smiled warmly, kissing Emily’s forehead.

"He knows it’s Christmas," Emily laughed softly, leaning her head comfortably against his shoulder.

The heavy oak front doors chimed, and Julian Vance, Mrs. Gable, and Detective Miller—now a close family friend—walked into the living room, bringing with them cold snow air and armfuls of wrapped gifts, laughing and shouting festive cheer.

"Merry Christmas, everyone!" Mrs. Gable called out, setting a large tray of homemade gingerbread cookies on the coffee table.

"Merry Christmas!" Lily cheered, jumping up and giving Mrs. Gable a big hug.

As the guests gathered around the fireplace, laughing, sharing stories, and sipping hot spiced cider, Emily stood up slowly and walked over to the tall glass window overlooking the snow-covered valley below.

In the far distance, across the glowing city lights of Bayside, she could see the distant silhouette of the fifty-four-story Mercer Dynamics tower, its top spire lit up in bright green and red lights against the dark winter sky.

David walked up behind her, sliding his arms gently around her waist, resting his chin on her head as they looked out at the city together.

"What are you wishing for tonight, Director Mercer?" David teased gently, using her legal married name.

Emily smiled, placing her hand over his.

"I don't need to wish for anything, David," Emily whispered, her voice ringing clear, true, and peaceful against the soft crackle of the fireplace. "Because everything I ever prayed for... is standing right here in this room."

David kissed her cheek, holding her tightly as the snow continued to fall softly outside, blanketing the world in clean, pure white.

The empty refrigerator was gone forever.

The dark nights of fear were buried beneath the snow.

And in their place stood an unbroken horizon of light, love, and a family that would never be broken again.
