Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

By Wednesday, the fallout from Richard’s arrest had sent shockwaves through his professional life.
Richard worked as a senior logistics director at Vanguard Freight Systems—a regional shipping firm where my late grandfather’s investment group held a thirty percent silent equity stake. Richard had secured his position three years ago largely due to my grandfather’s historical influence and my quiet recommendation to the managing board.
At 10:00 AM, Marcus called me with an urgent update.
"Clara, Vanguard’s Board of Directors just convened an emergency session," Marcus reported. "Word of Richard’s bank fraud arrest and the temporary restraining order reached the Chief Executive Officer, Arthur Pendelton. Arthur wants you on a private secure conference line immediately."
I sat at my desk, opening my laptop. "Connect him."
A second later, Arthur Pendelton’s authoritative voice filled the room. Arthur was an old-school executive in his sixties who had known my grandfather for thirty years.
"Clara, my dear," Arthur began, his tone laced with deep anger and genuine concern. "I am appalled. I just read the certified police report regarding the attempted unauthorized fund transfers and the lockout incident at your residence. Is all of this true?"
"Every word of it, Arthur," I said steadily. "I have the police records, the hospital discharge time-stamps proving I was in labor when the locks were changed, and the digital logs of the attempted bank withdrawals."
Arthur let out a heavy sigh that sounded like grinding stones. "Richard sat in my office three days ago and told me he needed a two-week paid leave because you were experiencing a severe medical crisis and had abandoned the baby. He used company legal counsel to draft his initial filings against you!"
My hands clenched into tight fists beneath the desk. "He used Vanguard’s corporate attorneys?"
"He lied to our chief legal counsel, claiming it was an urgent family emergency involving an endangered child," Arthur growled. "The board is livid. Not only has he committed felony bank fraud using corporate network infrastructure, but he has brought immense reputational damage to this firm. We are terminating his employment effective immediately for gross misconduct and breach of corporate ethics."
"Wait, Arthur," I interrupted smoothly. "Don't terminate him yet."
Silence hung on the line for a moment. "What are you thinking, Clara?" Arthur asked, intrigued.
"If you fire him today, his attorney will use his sudden unemployment to claim in family court that I ruined his livelihood, and he’ll demand emergency spousal alimony from my trust," I explained calmly. "Suspend him without pay pending the criminal investigation. Freeze his access to company servers, audit his expense accounts, and let him hang by his own financial rope."
Arthur chuckled—a low, satisfied sound. "Your grandfather’s blood runs pure in your veins, Clara. It shall be done. We will launch a full internal forensic audit of his department starting at noon."

"Thank you, Arthur. Send the audit findings directly to Marcus."
I ended the call and leaned back in my chair. Richard had thought he could use corporate power and legal bluffs to crush me while I was recovering. Now, his job was hanging by a single thread, his bank accounts were under investigation, and his own company was preparing to hand his internal records over to my legal team.
