Chapter 5 — The Woman the System Tried to Divide in Two

The city outside Adrian Vale’s office kept moving like nothing had changed.

That was the most insulting part of it.

Buses still ran. Neon signs still blinked. People still argued over money and love and weather like reality had not just quietly shifted beneath their feet.

But inside Vesper, nothing was stable anymore.

Not the systems.

Not the silence.

Not Adrian himself.

He stood in front of the glass wall, staring at the reflection of a man who looked like he had not slept in years—even though it had only been one night.

Behind him, Miles Kerr spoke without urgency.

“Lila hasn’t slept again.”

Adrian didn’t turn.

“She refuses sedation,” Miles added.

That got Adrian’s attention.

Slowly, he turned.

“She should not be able to resist it,” Adrian said.

Miles nodded once.

“That’s what worries me.”

A pause.

Then Miles added something quieter.

“She says the more she sleeps, the more she loses ‘the other version of herself.’”

Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly.

“There is no other version,” he said.

Miles looked at him.

“You’re not sure of that.”

Silence.

Because Adrian wasn’t.

Not anymore.

In the secured room, Lila sat on the floor with her knees pulled to her chest.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t afraid.

She looked like someone listening to a conversation no one else could hear.

When Adrian entered, she looked up immediately.

“You’re tired,” she said.

Adrian stopped a few steps inside.

“That’s not relevant,” he replied.

Lila tilted her head slightly.

“It is,” she said. “When you get tired, you forget what you’re trying to control.”

That sentence landed too precisely.

Miles, standing behind Adrian, stiffened slightly.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Lila,” he said carefully. “What do you mean by ‘other version’?”

She hesitated.

Then looked down at her wrist.

The crescent mark.

“It changes when I sleep too long,” she said.

Miles frowned.

“That’s not how memory works.”

Lila looked up at him.

“I don’t think it’s memory,” she said quietly.

Silence.

Adrian crouched again.

“Then what is it?”

Lila hesitated for a long time.

Then:

“It feels like someone is switching something off.”

At the exact same moment, across the city, Emma Walker stopped mid-step in her kitchen.

Her hand froze over a glass.

A sensation passed through her chest.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She blinked once.

Then again.

“What… was that?” she whispered.

Her phone lit up without notification.

No vibration.

No sound.

Just screen activation.

A file appeared.

No download request.

No app.

Just presence.

LILA // ACTIVE THREAD LINK CONFIRMED

Emma’s breath caught.

She stepped back immediately.

“No,” she said out loud. “No, I didn’t open anything.”

But the file remained.

And underneath it—

another line appeared.

SYNC STATUS: PARTIAL

Emma’s heart started beating harder.

She didn’t understand the word.

But her body did.

Because something inside her reacted like it had been called by name.

Back at Vesper, alarms did not trigger.

Nothing broke.

Nothing failed.

Instead—

systems updated.

Quietly.

Like a thought completing itself.

Miles looked at the security monitor and frowned.

“Did you authorize a network scan?” he asked.

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he hadn’t.

But the system had already begun mapping something new.

A connection.

Not external.

Not internal.

Between.

Miles stepped closer to the screen.

“That’s not possible,” he said again, but softer now.

Adrian stared at the data forming.

Two identifiers.

One labeled:

E. WALKER

The other:

LILA (UNVERIFIED PRIMARY NODE)

A line formed between them.

Not metaphorical.

Structural.

A live connection thread.

Miles went still.

“That’s not data,” he said quietly.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“No,” he agreed. “It’s alignment.”

Lila suddenly pressed her hand against her chest.

She inhaled sharply.

Adrian moved immediately.

“Lila?” he said sharply.

She blinked quickly.

“It hurts,” she whispered.

Miles stepped forward. “Where?”

She shook her head.

“Not pain,” she corrected. “Like… I’m being pulled.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“Pulled toward what?”

Lila looked up at him.

Her voice was smaller now.

“Hers.”

Silence.

Miles slowly turned toward Adrian.

“Tell me you’re not thinking what I think you’re thinking.”

Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

Because he was already thinking it.

The system didn’t create two identical marks.

It created distributed identity anchors.

Which meant—

Emma Walker was not a single node.

She was a divided structure.

Split across time.

Or perception.

Or containment layers.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

“She was separated,” he said quietly.

Miles frowned. “From what?”

Adrian’s eyes stayed on Lila.

“From herself.”

Across the city, Emma dropped the glass she was holding.

It shattered on the floor.

She didn’t move.

Because her reflection in the kitchen window—

did not match her expression anymore.

For a fraction of a second—

it looked like someone else was standing behind her.

But when she turned—

nothing was there.

Only silence.

Only the lingering sensation of being observed from inside her own body.

Back at Vesper, Lila’s breathing steadied again.

But her eyes had changed slightly.

Less confusion.

More clarity.

“She’s closer now,” Lila said softly.

Miles stepped back.

“This is getting worse.”

Adrian didn’t respond.

Because he finally understood something he had avoided naming.

Emma Walker was not being tracked.

She was being reconstructed.

And Lila—

was the part of her that had been allowed to wake first.

Adrian stood slowly.

“Lila,” he said.

She looked at him.

He hesitated for the first time.

Then asked:

“When you say ‘her’… do you mean Emma?”

Lila shook her head.

Very slowly.

“No,” she said.

A pause.

Then:

“I mean the part of her that was never supposed to be separated.”

Silence.

Miles whispered, almost to himself:

“Then what is Emma Walker?”

Lila answered immediately.

Not thinking.

Not hesitating.

Like the answer had always been there.

“She’s what’s left when the system finishes dividing you.”

And somewhere deep inside Vesper’s hidden infrastructure—

a dormant protocol that had not activated in over a decade finally completed its handshake sequence.
