Chapter 6 - The Gathering at St. Patrick's

The morning sun broke through the grey city haze, casting long, brilliant shafts of light through the stained-glass windows of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue.

Outside, Fifth Avenue was blocked off for four blocks.

Dozens of television news trucks lined the curbs, their satellite dishes deployed, reporters speaking frantically into microphones about the 'Wedding of the Century' between New York's most eligible corporate titan and the daughter of Senator Vance.

Inside the cathedral, four hundred guests filled the dark mahogany pews.

Governors, federal judges, foreign ambassadors, shipping magnates, and senior figures from the five families sat side by side, wearing tailor-made tuxedos and haute couture gowns. The altar was covered in tens of thousands of imported white orchids, their fragrance heavy and sweet in the incense-scented air.

At the front left pew sat Senator Arthur Vance, Sr., wearing a three-piece charcoal suit, his silver hair immaculate, conversing low with his younger brother, Arthur Vance, Jr.

"Where is Sofia?" Arthur Jr. whispered, checking his gold Patek Philippe watch for the third time in ten minutes. "It's 11:45. She was supposed to be in the holding room twenty minutes ago."

"She's with her mother," the Senator replied smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "Alessandro's detail escorted her vehicle personally from Westbury. Don't worry, Arthur. The contracts are signed. Once the vows are exchanged today, the Moretti shipping network belongs to our oversight board."

Arthur Jr. smirked, leaning back against the wooden pew. "And what about the secondary shipments from Newark?"

"The first container ships out on Monday," the Senator murmured. "Alessandro will be too busy on his honeymoon in Capri to look at the bill of lading."

Suddenly, the massive bronze entrance doors at the rear of the cathedral swung open with a heavy, echoing CLANG.

The four hundred guests turned in their seats, expecting to see the white silk gown of Sofia Vance.

Instead, a battalion of twelve men in black suits walked down the center aisle.

They didn't carry flowers. They carried leather tactical folders and wore the gold shields of the United States Attorney's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation around their necks.

At the head of the group walked Marcus Thorne—the Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, a man known for tearing down organized crime syndicates and corrupt politicians alike.

The crowd gasped. Whispers erupted like a swarm of angry bees through the high vaulted nave.

Senator Vance stood up abruptly, his face darkening with political rage. "Thorne? What is the meaning of this outrage? This is a private religious ceremony!"

Marcus Thorne stopped at the foot of the altar, pulling a thick stack of blue-bound federal arrest warrants from his leather briefcase.

"Senator Arthur Vance, Sr. and Arthur Vance, Jr.," Thorne's voice echoed through the cathedral's sound system, cold, clear, and lethal. "By order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal wire fraud, interstate transportation of illegal narcotics, human trafficking, and first-degree extortion."

"This is absurd!" Arthur Jr. shouted, stepping forward, his face red with sudden panic. "You have no jurisdiction here! Where is Alessandro Moretti?"

"Mr. Moretti is currently in the federal courthouse downtown," Thorne replied smoothly, pointing a gloved finger toward the rear of the church where two dozen federal marshals were moving down the side aisles. "Where he has spent the last four hours providing six years of encrypted financial records, internal communications, and video evidence supplied directly from the Vance private estate in Queens."

"He... he did what?" the Senator stammered, his knees buckling slightly against the wooden pew.

"He also provided a sworn affidavit from Miss Isabella Bennett," Thorne added, a cold, sharp smile touching his lips. "Regarding the unlawful imprisonment, extortion, and child endangerment charges filed against you personally, Senator."

Before the Senator could answer, federal marshals stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists right in front of four hundred members of New York's elite society.

Photographers from the press gallery at the rear of the church began flashing hundreds of cameras, the white light strobing wildly across the stained glass, capturing the downfall of the Vance political dynasty in real-time.

"Where is Sofia?" Arthur Jr. screamed as he was slammed down onto the marble altar steps and hand-cuffed. "Where is she?!"

Thorne looked down at him with utter contempt.

"Miss Vance is currently in federal custody at Rikers Island," Thorne said. "Charged as an accessory to corporate treason and conspiracy to commit paternity fraud against the Moretti estate. Her bail has been set at fifty million dollars."

Thorne turned to the shocked, silent crowd filling the cathedral.

"The wedding is canceled," Thorne announced calmly into the microphone. "Have a good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen."
