Chapter 10 - The Home We Build

The first snow of December was falling softly over Winnetka, dusting the dark green pine trees in soft, white powder.

The large floor-to-ceiling windows of the Wilson estate were glowing with warm, orange light from the massive stone fireplace in the main living room.

A fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood in the corner near the piano, covered in golden lights, handmade paper snowflakes created by Sophie, and dozens of small silver butterfly ornaments.

At the long oak dining table, a massive holiday feast was set out—roast turkey, warm cider, fresh bread, and platters of pastries.

Sterling sat at the head of the table, arguing playfully with Ross about the best way to smoke a turkey, while Jennifer sat beside Emily, laughing as they looked through an album of photographs from the foundation's new clinic opening in Pilsen.

Miles stood near the glass doors, holding a glass of sparkling cider, watching the soft snowflakes drift down toward the dark, quiet lake.

A small hand slipped into his.

Miles looked down.

Sophie was standing beside him, wearing red pajamas with reindeer on them, holding Mr. Buttons by his paw.

"Uncle Miles?" she asked, looking out at the snow.

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Is Mom's leg all better now?"

Miles looked back at the table, where Emily was laughing happily, her face full of health, strength, and peace.

"Her leg is completely better," Miles said, dropping to one knee so he was at eye level with her. "And her heart is better too."

"My heart is better too," Sophie said simply, wrapping her arm around his neck. "I used to think that when people leave, they never come back. But you came back."

Miles pulled her close, pressing his forehead against hers, feeling the deep, unbreakable warmth of her small life against his own.

"I came back," Miles whispered, his voice full of a quiet, everlasting peace. "And I'm never leaving again."

Outside, the snow fell softly over the wide, peaceful land, covering the old scars, the dark shadows, and the cold roads of the past in a clean, quiet blanket of pure white, while inside, the house remained filled with light, laughter, warmth, and the home they had built together.

(THE END)
