Chapter 7 - The Unravelling

The fallout from Brandon’s termination was immediate and explosive.
Deprived of his high executive salary and corporate expense accounts, Brandon and Paige’s extravagant lifestyle collapsed like a house of cards. Within three weeks, creditors began calling. The lease on their luxury European sports car was defaulted, and mortgage payments on their sprawling suburban mansion fell into arrears.
Paige was furious. Used to unlimited spending, she turned her wrath on Brandon, resulting in loud, public arguments that echoed through their neighborhood.
Meanwhile, Beverly tried every tactic in her manipulation manual to reverse my father's decision. She staged dramatic crying spells, threatened to move out, and accused my father of destroying his family for an ungrateful daughter.
For the first time in forty years, my father stood his ground. He moved into the guest bedroom, refused to discuss company business with her, and placed firm financial limits on her access to joint accounts.
One evening, while I was preparing dinner with Lily and Emma, there was an aggressive knocking at my front door.
I opened it to find Paige standing there, her makeup smudged, her eyes wild with fury.
"You ruined us!" Paige screamed in the hallway, completely uncaring that neighbors could hear. "You miserable, jealous bitch! Brandon lost his job! We’re losing the car! My boys are going to have to transfer out of private school! Are you happy now?"
I stood in the doorway, keeping my body positioned to shield my daughters who were watching from the kitchen archway.
"Paige," I said calmly, my voice flat. "Brandon didn't lose his job because of me. He lost his job because he committed corporate fraud. He spent money that didn't belong to him."
"It was family money!" she shrieked. "It belonged to him anyway!"
"It belonged to my father," I corrected her. "And some of it belonged to me. You enjoyed ninety-five-dollar steaks while making sure my daughters sat hungry. You laughed when my mother humiliated them. Did you really think there would never be a reckoning?"
"You're a monster!" Paige yelled, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs. "You tore this family apart!"
"No," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "I just stopped holding it together at my children's expense. Now get off my porch before I call the police for trespassing."
Paige stared at me, seeing for the first time that her tantrums had zero power over me. Shaking with rage and shame, she turned on her heel and hurried down the stairs.
I closed the door, locked it, and took a deep breath. Lily walked up to me and gently took my hand.
"Mommy?" she asked quietly. "Are you okay?"

I looked down at my sweet, resilient daughter, kissed her forehead, and smiled.
"I've never been better, sweetie. Let me help you with your homework."
