Chapter 2 - The Lockout

The front doors swung open, admitting a cool autumn breeze along with the sharp, decisive footfalls of Arthur Sterling’s team.
Arthur stepped into the foyer first, his sharp grey eyes sweeping the room, taking in Graham’s rumpled suit, Sabrina’s soaked silk blouse, and Lorraine’s trembling hands. Behind him, Dr. Aris Thorne—a world-renowned pediatric neurologist—and Eleanor Vance, a formidable senior partner from Manhattan’s top family law firm, stepped onto the marble floor.
"Arthur?" Graham stammered, stepping into the foyer, his authority crumbling instantly. "What the hell are you doing here? You report to the board of Keller Northstar! I am the Chief Executive Officer!"
Arthur pulled a folded white document from his breast pocket and handed it to Eleanor Vance, who stepped forward with practiced composure.
"Mr. Keller," Eleanor said, her voice dry and echoing off the high ceilings. "As of 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time today, an emergency extraordinary session of the Board of Directors of Keller Northstar was convened in Seattle. Based on the financial restructuring documents signed by your late father and the equity transfer executed by Mrs. Audrey Keller during her tenure in the Western Division, Audrey Keller holds fifty-two percent of the voting shares in the parent company."
Graham blinked, his hands twitching at his sides. "That... that’s impossible. My father left the company to me!"
"Your father left you thirty percent, Graham," Audrey said quietly, leaning against the archway. "He left thirty percent to me, and twenty percent in a trust for Micah. When you begged me to go to Seattle twenty months ago to save the company from bankruptcy, you signed a voting proxy agreement granting me total control over your shares until the Western expansion was debt-free. Did you think I spent twenty months in Seattle just running logistics?"
Graham’s breath caught in his throat. "Audrey... we can talk about this in private—"
"By unanimous vote of the board," Eleanor Vance continued, cutting Graham off without a second glance, "your executive privileges have been suspended effective immediately, pending a full forensic audit of the corporate accounts. Furthermore, Mrs. Keller has executed a formal eviction order for this property."
Lorraine shrieked, clutching little Theo to her chest. "Eviction?! You can't evict us! This is my grandson’s home! This is Graham’s family estate!"
"This is my estate," Audrey said, her gaze fixing on her mother-in-law. "And you, Lorraine, have five minutes to take your personal belongings and step off my property."
Dr. Thorne stepped toward the stairs, carrying a lightweight medical kit. "Mrs. Keller, where is the child?"
"Upstairs," Audrey said, her tone softening instantly. "Second door on the right. He is terrified of loud noises, Dr. Thorne. Please be gentle."
"Of course," Dr. Thorne replied quietly, ascending the stairs with two medical assistants following close behind.
Sabrina lunged forward, pointing a manicured finger at Audrey. "You think you can just come back here and throw us out onto the street?! Graham owns half of everything! I have rights in this house! I’ve lived here for over a year!"
Eleanor Vance pulled a second document from her briefcase. "Miss Cole, as a former junior marketing assistant at Keller Northstar, you are currently under active investigation for corporate espionage and grand larceny. Our audit team has already flagged $340,000 in unauthorized wire transfers from the company’s petty cash reserves directly into a private account registered under your name. If you do not leave these premises within three minutes, the officers waiting at the gate will execute an arrest warrant."
Sabrina’s face turned grey. She turned to Graham, grabbing his arm violently. "Graham! Do something! Tell them I had permission! You authorized those transfers! You told me it was part of my compensation!"
Graham shoved her hand off his arm, his eyes wide with self-preservation. "I... I didn't authorize anything! You told me those were vendor payments!"
"You cowardly liar!" Sabrina screamed, her voice cracking as she slapped Graham across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the foyer.
Lorraine began to weep hysterically, clutching Theo, who started to cry at the loud noises. "Graham! Call the police! Call our lawyers! This woman is destroying our family!"
"The police are already here, Lorraine," Arthur Sterling said calmly, pointing toward the open front door where two marked state trooper vehicles had just pulled up behind the black SUVs, their red and blue lights flashing against the pale stone facade of the house. "They are here to ensure the peaceable execution of the trespass order."
Audrey stood motionless in the center of the foyer, watching the complete, frantic collapse of the people who had spent twenty months destroying her son.
Graham fell to his knees in front of her, grabbing the hem of her jacket. "Audrey... please. Look at me. I made a mistake! I was lonely! My mother pushed me into this! Sabrina seduced me while you were away! I didn't know they were treating Micah like this! I swear to God, I didn't know!"
Audrey looked down at the man she had loved, the man whose company she had broken her back to save while sleeping four hours a night in cheap Seattle hotel rooms.
She slowly leaned down until her face was inches from his.
"You knew he was under that coffee table, Graham," she whispered, her voice an icy blade. "You looked at him every single day and let your mother feed another man's pride while your own son crawled in the dust. You didn't just fail as a husband, Graham. You failed as a human being."
She pulled her jacket from his grip and turned to Arthur.

"Remove them," Audrey said softly. "All three of them."
As the troopers stepped inside to escort the screaming Sabrina, the weeping Lorraine, and the broken Graham into the night, Audrey turned and walked slowly up the stairs toward her son.
