Chapter 5 - The Glass House Cracks

By 2:00 PM, Graham Keller walked out of the Westchester County Courthouse on temporary signature bail, flanked by his high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Vance.

Graham looked haggard, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes wild with exhaustion and rage. His mother, Lorraine, was sitting on a bench inside the precinct lobby, weeping into a handkerchief while child welfare officers filed their preliminary report.

"This is a nightmare, Marcus!" Graham hissed as they stepped onto the courthouse steps, where a small crowd of local reporters had gathered. "She took my house! She took my company! She had me arrested in front of my neighbors!"

"Calm down, Graham," Marcus Vance warned, pulling him toward a silver sedan parked at the curb. "We still have options. The court hasn't granted permanent custody yet. We can frame this as a corporate coup executed by a bitter wife who abandoned her family for twenty months to pursue her career. Public sympathy will align with a father who was left alone to raise a child with severe special needs."

Graham wiped his face with the back of his hand, a desperate spark of hope returning to his eyes. "Yes... yes! She abandoned us! She left Micah! She cared more about Seattle than her own son!"

They pulled away from the curb, driving toward Graham’s secondary office in White Plains.

As they stepped into the private lobby, Graham’s phone began ringing frantically. It was his personal wealth manager at J.P. Morgan.

"Graham!" the banker’s voice sounded panicked through the speaker. "What the hell is happening?! We just received a master freeze order from the Supreme Court!"

Graham froze. "A freeze order? On what?"

"On everything!" the banker yelled. "Your personal checking accounts, your investment portfolios, your corporate credit lines! Audrey Keller’s legal team presented a commercial fraud injunction tied to the $2.1 million embezzled from Keller Northstar! Every single account associated with your Social Security number has been locked!"

Graham’s knees buckled, and he grabbed the edge of the marble reception desk to keep from falling. "No... no! What about the Soho penthouse?! The property in my name?!"

"Seized!" the banker replied. "The Sheriff’s Department is serving an asset attachment notice on the Soho property right now. Sabrina Cole was just picked up by federal agents at her boutique in Manhattan!"

Graham dropped the phone. It shattered against the tile floor.

"Marcus..." Graham whispered, looking at his lawyer with hollow, terrified eyes. "She’s taking everything... she’s wiping me out..."

Marcus Vance checked his own tablet, his expression darkening rapidly as he read the incoming court filings.

"Graham," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a grave whisper. "It’s worse than that. Audrey didn't just freeze your money. She just released the complete medical records from Mount Sinai to the family court judge. Dr. Aris Thorne’s affidavit states that Micah’s injuries are consistent with systematic, long-term abuse and intentional confinement."

Graham stumbled backward into a chair, holding his head in his hands. "My mother... my mother did that! She said it was discipline! She said Micah needed to learn his place!"

"The judge doesn't care about your mother, Graham," Marcus said coldly, closing his tablet. "The judge sees a father who stood by and watched it happen while spending company money on his mistress. The District Attorney is upgrading the charges to felony child endangerment and conspiracy."

Marcus picked up his briefcase and buttoned his jacket.

"Marcus?" Graham looked up, his voice cracking. "Where are you going?"

May you like

"I'm withdrawing as your counsel, Graham," Marcus said plainly. "My firm doesn't represent child abusers facing federal fraud indictments. You should hire a public defender."

The lawyer turned and walked out of the office, leaving Graham sitting alone in the empty, silent room as the cold reality of his absolute ruin closed in around him.
