Chapter 5 - The Bridal Suite Illusion

High above the manicured lawns of the resort, inside the opulent, multi-room bridal suite, Arthur stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, admiring the line of his bespoke white tuxedo jacket. He adjusted his silk bowtie with practiced precision, a smooth, unbothered smile resting on his handsome face.

The room was filled with the scent of expensive cologne, champagne, and the high-pitched laughter of Vanessa, who was currently being fitted into her thousands-of-dollars designer silk gown by two nervous bridesmaids.

"Arthur, darling," Vanessa called out, her voice dripping with vanity as she looked at her reflection. "Did your assistant confirm that the corporate clients from the port authority arrived? Mr. Sterling from the maritime board is incredibly important for our quarterly expansion, and I want to ensure his table is positioned right next to the head terrace."

"They're all here, Vanessa," Arthur said, turning away from the mirror to pour himself another glass of vintage Dom Pérignon. "Every major client from Savannah to Jacksonville has checked in. By tonight, Vance & Associates will be recognized as the premier logistics firm in the region, with you as my beautiful co-director. The old regime is officially dead and buried."

He emphasized the word buried with a small, private toast to his own cleverness. He felt entirely unburdened. The inconvenient reality of his sick wife had been resolved by nature, and the burden of his three daughters had been successfully shifted onto the shoulders of a broken down, elderly grandfather who wouldn't have the energy or the resources to challenge him.

A soft knock sounded at the door of the suite. Arthur’s personal assistant, a young man named Kevin, stepped inside, looking slightly anxious.

"Mr. Vance," Kevin said, holding a clipboard. "The catering director needs your final authorization on the champagne toast logistics, and... well, there’s a slight issue at the front gate."

Arthur frowned, his expression turning sharp. "An issue? I told you, Kevin, nobody enters this property without an invitation. I don't care if it's local press or distant family members looking for a handout."

"It's not press, sir," Kevin stammered, looking down at his notes. "It's your father-in-law, Charles Vance. He just pulled through the main causeway checkpoint. He has an original family invitation card, and... he has the three girls with him."

Arthur’s hand froze around his champagne glass. His eyes narrowed into slits of pure, venomous irritation. "The old fool. What is he doing here? I explicitly told him I would handle the paperwork next week. He’s trying to cause a scene because he wants more child support money."

Vanessa spun around, her face twisting into a mask of anger despite the heavy layers of bridal makeup. "Arthur! I told you I didn't want those children anywhere near my wedding! They’ll ruin the photographs! Look at them—they're probably dressed in cheap funeral black, looking like little orphans! Get rid of them immediately!"

"Calm down, Vanessa," Arthur said, his smooth voice returning as he set his glass down. "Charles is an old man who thinks he’s playing the part of the noble protector. He’s probably brought them here to make me feel guilty. I’ll go down to the pavilion myself and handle him before the guests take their seats. Kevin, have the resort security team meet me near the ballroom lobby. If Charles refuses to leave quietly, we'll have him removed for disturbing a private corporate function."

He smoothed the lapels of his white jacket, entirely confident that he could control the situation. He had spent years managing people, manipulating contracts, and rewriting reality to suit his needs. He truly believed that an old man and three helpless children were nothing more than a minor administrative error he could erase with a single phone call.
