Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

The grand ballroom of the Cloister Resort was a spectacle of absolute luxury. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, brilliant glow over two hundred guests dressed in black-tie attire. The air was filled with the soft sounds of a live string quartet, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the low hum of conversation among the region’s wealthiest maritime executives and political figures.

At the entrance of the ballroom, the resort’s head of security stood beside the check-in desk, his expression hardening as he watched a strange group walk through the polished limestone lobby.

It was me, dressed in my old, perfectly preserved Navy dress uniform, my medals polished and pinned neatly to my chest. Beside me stood Lucy, Rachel, and April. They weren't wearing rags, and they weren't crying. They were dressed in beautiful, simple navy-blue dresses that Rose had purchased for them months ago for a family portrait that never happened. They walked with their chins held high, their faces calm and steady, looking like royalty entering a hall of commoners.

"Sir," the security guard said, stepping forward to block our path to the double oak doors. "This is a private event for the Vance-Whittaker wedding. I’m going to have to ask you to step outside."

"I have our invitation right here," I said, presenting the embossed cream card. "I am Charles Vance, father of the late co-founder of the company being celebrated tonight. And these are the sole heirs to the Vance estate."

Before the guard could respond, the heavy doors opened from the inside, and Arthur stepped into the lobby. He looked immaculate in his white tuxedo, but his face turned purple with rage the instant his eyes landed on us.

"Charles," Arthur hissed, keeping his voice low so the guests inside wouldn't hear. "What the hell do you think you're doing? This is my wedding day. You have no right to bring these children here to disrupt my life."

"We aren't disrupting anything, Arthur," I said, my voice ringing out clearly through the limestone lobby, catching the attention of several guests near the open doors. "We are here to celebrate your new beginning. After all, you invited us."

"Get them out of here," Arthur ordered, turning to the security guards. "Now. This man is trespassing, and he’s using minor children to harass my family."

"We aren't trespassing, Father," Lucy spoke up, her voice steady and piercingly clear. She stepped forward, pulling a document from her small purse. "This is a certified copy of the emergency guardianship order signed by the family court this afternoon. You no longer have any legal authority over us. You gave us up at the cemetery, remember? You said we were nothing but an obstacle."

Several guests inside the ballroom doorway turned around, their conversations dying out as they overheard the twelve-year-old girl’s words.

Arthur’s face went pale, then flush with fury. "You little brat. You’ve been reading things you don't understand. Your grandfather is manipulative old bastard who’s trying to ruin my reputation because he can't accept that Rose is gone."

"Oh, we understand perfectly, Arthur," I said, stepping closer until I was standing inches from his polished face. "We understand the forgery. We understand the shell company in the Caymans. And we understand exactly what you said to Vanessa about dropping these girls off at Child Protective Services so you wouldn't have to spend your fortune on your dead wife's baggage."

"You're insane," Arthur whispered, his eyes darting nervously toward the ballroom doors, where more than a dozen corporate clients were now standing, watching the scene unfold with wide, horrified eyes. "You have no proof of anything. Security, remove them immediately!"

"Don't touch them," a sharp voice called out from the back of the lobby.

Marcus Sterling stepped through the glass entrance doors, accompanied by two men in dark business suits carrying leather briefcases and a federal marshal wearing a badge on his belt.

"Arthur Vance," the federal marshal said, walking straight toward the groom. "I am a United States Marshal for the Southern District of Georgia. I have a warrant for your arrest on federal charges of wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."
