Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

At 10:00 AM the following morning, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with over two hundred reporters, corporate executives, and high-society elites.
Word had leaked at midnight that Vincent Bellini, the elusive titan of Chicago’s underbelly, was making a major announcement regarding his personal life and the restructuring of Bellini Holdings.
Behind the velvet backstage curtains, Mara stood before a floor-length mirror.
She barely recognized the woman looking back at her. The bruised, torn girl from Bellini’s Crown was gone. In her place stood a queen. She wore a tailored ivory silk gown that hugged her curves, a high collar that subtly concealed the small bandage on her neck, and a breathtaking diamond necklace borrowed from the Bellini family vault. Her honey-brown hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and subtle makeup disguised the slight swelling on her lip.
Vincent stepped up behind her, adjusting the cuffs of his black tuxedo. In the mirror, they looked like an untouchable power couple.
"Are you ready?" Vincent asked, his hand resting lightly against the small of her back.
"Grant and my mother will be watching," Mara said, taking a deep breath.
"I know," Vincent replied with a grim smile. "I had two front-row invitations delivered to their doorstep an hour ago."
Mara turned her head, surprised. "They're here?"
"They think they’re attending a public shaming of Bellini’s enemies," Vincent said, his eyes flashing. "They have no idea who is sitting at the head table."
The doors opened, and Vincent led Mara out onto the brightly lit stage. Flashes from dozens of cameras went off simultaneously, creating a blinding sea of white light.
In the second row of the audience, Mara immediately spotted them.
Evelyn was wearing her best pearl necklace, looking around with greedy curiosity. Grant sat beside her, his face pale, a large white bandage strapped across the wrist Cal had twisted the night before. Lauren was next to him, picking at her nails with a bored expression.
When Vincent walked up to the podium, the room fell dead silent.
"Good morning," Vincent said, his deep voice carrying effortlessly through the microphone. "Thank you for joining us. Today, Bellini Holdings is announcing a major shift in our philanthropic and commercial portfolio."
He gestured toward Mara, who stood gracefully beside him.
"First, I would like to introduce my wife, Mara Bellini."
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Cameras began flashing violently.
In the second row, Grant Holloway stood straight up out of his chair, his face instantly turning a violent shade of red. Evelyn’s mouth dropped open, her hand flying to her pearls.
Vincent continued smoothly, ignoring the commotion.
"In celebration of our marriage, Bellini Holdings has acquired thirty-two commercial properties across the Lincoln Park district, including the historic Whitaker’s Artisan Breads."
He turned his gaze directly toward Grant.
"Additionally, following a comprehensive audit conducted late last night, Bellini Legal has uncovered extensive financial fraud, insurance tampering, and predatory extortion involving former management entities connected to the Whitaker estate. All relevant documentation has been handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Illinois State Attorney’s Office."
Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the ballroom from the side doors, accompanied by four Chicago police officers.
Grant backed away from his chair, his eyes wide with sheer panic. "Mom—Mom, we have to go," he stammered, turning toward the exit.
"Grant Holloway?" one of the federal agents called out, stepping into his path. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, insurance conspiracy, and illegal loan sharking operations."
"No! This is a mistake!" Grant screamed, struggling as the officers forced his arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "Mara! Mara, tell them! Tell them we're family!"
Mara walked slowly to the edge of the stage. She looked down at Grant, then at her mother, who was currently weeping hysterically as reporters swarmed around them, taking hundreds of photos of their ruin.
"You told me last night that I was going to be useful," Mara said quietly, her voice echoing clearly over the reporters' microphones. "You were right."

As Grant was dragged out of the ballroom in chains, screaming curses, Vincent stepped up beside Mara. He gently wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side.
For the first time in eighteen months, Mara Whitaker felt the heavy weight in her chest dissolve into absolute, unyielding freedom.
