Chapter 6 - The Trap at the Docks

"How did Grant get bail?" Mara asked, standing up as Vincent moved behind his desk. "The federal charges were unbailable!"
"Someone high up in the State Attorney's office pulled strings," Cal explained, placing a satellite photo on the desk. "The Cicero boss, Sal Moretti, wants the Lincoln Park property. He knows that if Grant dies or flees, the property defaults back to the bank or to the state. Moretti needs Grant alive to sign over his remaining claims to the estate trust."
Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Where is Grant now?"
"He was spotted two hours ago near the Calumet River docks," Cal said. "And boss... he wasn't alone. Evelyn Whitaker was with him."
Mara felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "My mother?"
"She posted her home as collateral for his bail bond," Cal said grimally. "They’re planning to run to Florida tonight on a cargo boat owned by Moretti."
Vincent stood, pulling a dark leather holster from his desk drawer and strapping it across his shoulders. "Get the cars. We end this tonight."
"Vincent, wait," Mara pleaded, stepping into his path. "It’s a trap. Moretti knows you'll go after Grant. He's using them as bait to draw you out of the city."
Vincent looked down at her, his dark eyes fierce and unyielding. "Mara, Grant Holloway laid hands on you. He threatened your life and tried to steal your father’s legacy. As long as he breathes, he is a threat to you. I don't care if Moretti has fifty men at those docks. Nobody touches what is mine and lives to brag about it."
"Then I’m coming with you," Mara said firmly.
Vincent narrowed his eyes. "No. It’s too dangerous."
"Grant is my family's sin, Vincent!" Mara argued, her eyes blazing with determination. "I spent my whole life letting them make decisions for me. I’m not sitting in this house waiting for a phone call like a helpless victim. I am your wife. If we go to war, we go together."

Vincent stared at her, caught between furious protest and overwhelming admiration. Slowly, a proud, lethal smile spread across his lips.
"Cal," Vincent barked. "Give her a bulletproof vest. And make sure she stays behind me at all times."
