Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

While Rachel and Lily’s lives flourished, the ripples of Daniel Mercer’s quiet crusade continued to expand through the corporate corridors of Chicago.

The public exposure of Vanguard Property Management had sent shockwaves through the commercial real estate sector. Rival logistics firms and private equity groups, sensing an opportunity to weaken Mercer National Logistics, began digging into Daniel’s personal life and corporate expenditures.

Leading the charge was Arthur Vance, Daniel’s former CFO, who had quietly resigned after the Ashford Academy incident, furious that Daniel had risked a $900 million corporate acquisition to defend a single bankrupt family.

Arthur sat in the glass-walled executive suite of Apex Holdings—Mercer Logistics' fiercest competitor—meeting with Julian Croft, a ruthless corporate raider known for hostile takeovers.

"Daniel Mercer has lost his edge," Arthur said, laying a dossier of internal Mercer Logistics documents on the table. "He’s spending tens of millions of dollars of corporate capital on social initiatives, buying up predatory debt, and fighting local housing boards. He’s distracted. The board of directors at Mercer National is nervous."

Julian Croft skimmed the dossier, a slow, predatory smile creeping across his thin lips. "A CEO who lets sentimentality drive capital allocation is a CEO begging to be replaced. How much stock do the institutional investors hold?"

"Forty-two percent," Arthur replied. "If we launch a proxy battle at the annual shareholders' meeting next month, we can convince them that Daniel is unfit to lead. We force him out, liquidate his social foundations, and strip the company down for twice its current valuation."

Julian leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "And what about the girl? The one from the school?"

"She’s his achilles heel," Arthur said coldly. "If we leak a story claiming Daniel misused corporate assets to fund a personal relationship with the mother, the media scandal alone will force the board’s hand."

Julian smiled, nodding slowly. "Prepare the press releases. Let's see how well Mr. Mercer sits on his curb when he loses his empire."
