Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

At 1:55 PM, the fifty-fourth floor of the Clayton Global Tower was alive with tense, hushed whispers.

Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom, twelve of Manhattan’s most powerful institutional investors and board members sat around a forty-foot mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Victoria Clayton, looking resplendent in an emerald-green Chanel suit, her diamond necklace sparkling under the recessed LED lights. To her right sat Richard Vance—a sleek, slimy man with thin hair, wearing an expensive suit that couldn't hide his nervous, twitching jaw.

"Thank you all for coming," Victoria began, her voice carrying the polished weight of old money. "We are here today to address a tragic and critical situation. My stepson, Edward, has clearly suffered a severe psychological break following the anniversary of his father's passing. Abandoning international shareholders to bring unknown street children into his residence is a clear violation of his fiduciary duty."

She signaled to her attorney, who began distributing black folders to the board members.

"We have here an emergency petition from the children’s legal uncle and next-of-kin, Mr. Richard Vance," Victoria continued smoothly. "Mr. Vance has been frantically searching for his orphaned nephew and niece. Edward has refused to release them, effectively holding them hostage to justify his absence from corporate duties."

A murmur of concern rippled around the table.

Arthur Abernathy, an eighty-year-old board member who had been Edward’s father’s closest partner, frowned deeply. "Victoria... this is a heavy charge. Edward built this firm's valuation from two billion to twelve billion. We cannot simply strip his voting rights based on—"

The heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open.

Edward Clayton walked into the room.

He wore his finest bespoke charcoal suit, his posture so commanding that the room instantly fell dead silent.

But he was not alone.

Holding his right hand was seven-year-old Leo, dressed in a sharp gray suit and polished black shoes. On Edward’s left hip, carried securely in his arm, was four-year-old Mia, wearing a sweet navy dress with a white lace collar.

Behind them walked two armed federal marshals and Vance, Edward’s chief legal strategist.

Victoria’s face turned the color of chalk. She stood up so fast her leather chair rolled back against the glass wall. "Edward! How dare you bring those... those children into a corporate proceeding!"

Richard Vance shrank back in his chair, trying to hide his face behind his folder.

Edward didn't say a word. He walked to the foot of the table, set Mia down gently on a leather chair, and placed his broad hand on Leo’s shoulder.

"Board members," Edward’s voice boomed through the quiet room, carrying an unshakeable, terrifying authority. "I would like to introduce you to the true owners of the Hudson Valley Water Rights Lease—the very lease required to finalize our three-billion-dollar Zurich partnership."

The board members gasped.

Edward signaled to Vance, who projected a series of financial documents, hospital records, and police affidavits directly onto the massive digital screens lining the wall.

"Forty-eight hours ago," Edward stated coldly, pointing a finger directly at Richard Vance, "this man... Richard Vance... falsified power-of-attorney documents while his sister lay dying in an ICU ward. He then locked his nephew and niece out of their home, leaving a seven-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl to freeze to death on the pavement outside this very building."

"That's a lie!" Richard Vance shrieked, standing up, his face red and sweating. "I was looking for them! They ran away!"

Leo stepped forward.

His small legs were trembling, but he looked directly at his uncle, his young voice ringing clear and true through the silent boardroom.

"You didn't look for us," Leo said. "You took Mom's ring. You told us if we came back, you'd put us in a cage. You left us in the snow."

The boardroom erupted into absolute uproar.

Old Arthur Abernathy slammed his hand on the table, his face red with fury as he glared at Victoria and Vance. "Guards! Do not let that man leave this room!"

The two federal marshals stepped forward, stepping behind Richard Vance’s chair and pulling out pair of steel handcuffs.

"Victoria Clayton, Richard Vance," the lead marshal announced, "you are under federal warrant for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and felony child endangerment."

Victoria collapsed back into her chair, her emerald suit crumpled, her hands shaking uncontrollably as the marshals stepped toward her.

Edward looked down at Leo. The little boy looked up at him, a tiny, disbelieving smile breaking across his face.

May you like

Edward reached out, taking Leo’s hand into his own broad palm.

"Meeting adjourned," Edward said.
