Chapter 9 - The Fire on the Cliff

At midnight, a dense ocean fog rolled over the East Hampton coastline, blanketing the estate in a thick, white shroud that muted the sound of the crashing waves.

Inside the mansion, the house was quiet.

Leo and Mia were fast asleep in their second-floor bedrooms. Edward sat in the living room, reading a book by the low light of a single floor lamp.

Outside, near the perimeter fence by the wooden garage, three dark figures slipped through the thick fog like shadows.

Marcus held a heavy plastic container of industrial accelerant. His two accomplices carried long road flares.

"Pour it along the wooden patio deck," Marcus ordered in a low whisper. "The wind from the ocean will carry the flames straight up into the second-floor bedrooms before the fire alarms even trigger."

They crept up the stone walkway toward the hydrangeas.

Suddenly, a massive, dark shape stepped out from the fog directly in front of them.

Hank.

The former marine stood six-foot-four, wearing a black tactical sweater, his arms folded across his chest, his eyes cold as steel.

"You boys lost?" Hank’s booming voice cut through the quiet night.

Marcus panicked. "Light it! Light it now!"

One of the accomplices struck a road flare, throwing it directly onto the accelerant poured near the garage door.

FOOOOOOSH!

A blinding wall of orange fire erupted instantly, lighting up the thick fog and sending a roaring cloud of black smoke billowing into the night sky.

The fire alarm inside the mansion began to blare with a deafening, rhythmic screech: BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! EMERGENCY!

Inside the master suite, Edward was on his feet in half a second.

He didn't grab valuables. He didn't grab his phone.

He sprinted down the hallway straight into the children's room.

"LEO! MIA!" Edward roared, smashing the door open.

The hallway was already filling with thin white smoke from the ventilation system. Leo was out of bed, holding a crying Mia by the hand, pointing toward the emergency fire exit leading to the rear stone terrace.

"Dad!" Leo yelled, his young voice steady despite the noise. "The front stair is full of smoke! We have to use the terrace!"

"Good boy!" Edward shouted, scooping Mia into his left arm and grabbing Leo’s hand with his right.

They sprinted down the stone terrace steps out into the cool ocean night air.

Down near the garage, Hank and two estate security guards had already pinned Marcus and his two accomplices to the wet grass, holding them down at gunpoint while the local fire department sirens wailed in the distance.

The fire, contained entirely to the unattached wooden garage by the estate's automated exterior sprinkler system, was already being extinguished by torrents of water cascading from the roof.

Edward stood on the lawn, holding both of his children tightly against his chest, watching the emergency lights flash through the fading smoke.

Hank walked over, wiping a smear of soot from his forehead, looking at Edward with a sharp nod. "It was Victoria’s driver, Mr. Clayton. He had a diamond ring from her collection in his pocket. The police have already notified the federal prosecutors. She’s being transferred to a maximum-security facility tonight. She’ll never see the light of day again."

Edward looked down at the men being loaded into the back of police cruisers, then looked at his children.

Leo wasn't crying. Mia wasn't screaming.

They were holding onto Edward, safe, warm, and secure in his arms, watching the flashing red lights with a calm, absolute trust.

The dark shadows of the past had thrown their final fire at the family.

And the family had stood unyielding.
