Chapter 6 - The Intruders of the Past

As winter deepened, a fragile truce began to form between Emily and Graham.
Graham was permitted to visit for two hours every evening. He learned how to bathe the babies, how to feed them without creating a mess, and how to read bedtime stories with exaggerated animal voices that made Chloe giggle uncontrollably. The children quickly grew attached to "Big Graham," running to the door with delighted shrieks whenever his key turned in the lock.
However, the world Graham had left behind in Boston was not willing to let him go so easily.
Richard Whitaker, Graham’s cold and formidable father, discovered where his son had vanished to. To Richard, a CEO stepping away from a multimillion-dollar firm to play house with an unmarried editor and her children was an unacceptable disgrace to the Whitaker name.
On a frosty afternoon, a sleek silver Bentley pulled up outside Emily's apartment building.
Richard Whitaker stepped out, wearing a cashmere coat, his face a mask of stern disapproval. He didn't knock on Emily's door gently; he entered with the authority of a man who believed he owned every room he walked into.
Emily opened the door to find the imposing patriarch standing in her hallway.
"So," Richard said, scanning the modest apartment with obvious disdain. "You're the woman who has paralyzed my son's career."
Emily stood straight, her instinct to protect her home flaring up instantly. "Mr. Whitaker. You were not invited here."
Before Richard could answer, Graham stepped out of the kitchen, wearing an apron and holding a baby bottle. His posture immediately hardened as he saw his father.
"What are you doing here, father?" Graham asked, his voice dropping into dangerous registers.
"I came to bring you back to reality," Richard said coldly, marching into the living room. "The board is questioning your sanity, Graham. You've abandoned a hundred-million-dollar expansion for... this? Three illegitimate children and a suburban illusion?"
Leo, startled by Richard's booming voice, began to cry.
Graham walked over, stood directly between his father and Emily's family, and looked Richard in the eyes.
"Do not speak about my family like that," Graham said softly, but with a terrifying intensity.
"Family?" Richard laughed mockingly. "You think this is family? You're playing a fool, Graham. They are using you for your wealth."
"They haven't taken a single dollar from me!" Graham roared, his composure finally breaking. "They survived without me because I was raised by a man who taught me that love was a weakness! You taught me to be cold, Richard! You taught me to abandon what matters most! But I am not you!"
Richard blinked, stunned by his son's sudden outburst.

"Get out of this house," Graham commanded, pointing to the door. "If you ever come near Emily or my children again, I will strip you of every board position you hold in Whitaker Development. I run the company now. Not you."
Richard stared at his son, realizing for the first time that the boy he had spent a lifetime controlling had grown into a man he could no longer touch. Without another word, Richard turned and walked out, slamming the door behind him.
