Chapter 8 - A Storm at the Lake

By the summer of their second year in Chicago, the triplets were over two years old—active, speaking in full sentences, and deeply attached to Graham.

To celebrate the children's growth and test their new bond, Graham, Emily, and the kids rented a small lakeside cabin in Michigan for a weekend getaway. The weather was warm, the lake was sparkling blue, and for the first time in two years, Emily felt a deep sense of lightness in her heart.

On Saturday afternoon, while Graham was helping Emily pack a picnic basket near the shore, a sudden, fierce squall rolled over the lake.

A sharp gust of wind caught the beach umbrella near the shallow water, sending it tumbling. Maya, always the fearless adventurer, chased after a shiny plastic bucket that was floating away into the lake.

Before Emily could scream, Maya tripped over a rock and fell into the deeper water near the end of the wooden dock, disappearing beneath the waves.

"MAYA!" Emily shrieked in absolute terror.

Graham didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He sprinted down the dock, kicking off his shoes, and dove headfirst into the murky, churned-up lake water.

Underneath the dark water, Graham opened his eyes, ignoring the burn of the weeds and silt. He saw a flash of yellow swimsuit floating downward. He kicked furiously, reaching out with everything he had, his lungs burning.

He caught Maya by her life vest, pulled her tightly to his chest, and kicked up toward the surface.

He broke through the water, gasping for air, holding the shivering, coughing toddler high above the waves. "I've got her! I've got her!" he yelled.

Graham swam back to the shore, climbing onto the sand, and wrapped Maya in a thick towel. He held her against his chest, tears streaming down his face as he kissed her wet forehead repeatedly. "You're okay, baby. Daddy's here. Daddy's got you."

Maya coughed up a bit of water, looked up at his terrified, dripping face, wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, and whispered, "Daddy... hold tight."

It was the first time any of the children had called him 'Daddy'.

Emily fell to her knees beside them, pulling both Graham and Maya into her arms, sobbing uncontrollably. As the rain began to fall around them, the three of them—along with Chloe and Leo, who were hugging Graham's legs—stood together in the storm, unbroken and absolute.
