Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

One year later.

The grand gardens of the Calder estate were decorated with white silk ribbon, fresh peonies, and golden lanterns glowing under the bright summer sun.

Two hundred guests—local union leaders, city officials, former staff members, and childhood friends—filled the white chairs arranged on the lawn.

At the altar beneath a massive arch of white roses stood Roman Calder, wearing an exquisite black tuxedo. Beside him stood Silas as his best man, and ten-year-old Caleb, dressed in a matching mini tuxedo, holding the velvet ring pillow with intense pride.

The soft music swelled.

The crowd stood up.

Down the long carpeted aisle walked Nora, wearing a breathtaking ivory lace wedding dress that swept softly across the grass. She carried a bouquet of white peonies and yellow chamomiles.

Beside her, walking her down the aisle, was Mrs. Adler—the kind old neighbor who had watched over Caleb during the dark years.

When Nora reached the altar, Roman stepped down, taking her hand gently in his.

His dark eyes were soft, filled with a radiant joy that no one in Baltimore would have believed possible two years ago.

“You look beautiful,” Roman whispered, his eyes glistening.

“You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Calder,” Nora teased softly, her radiant smile illuminating the entire garden.

The priest spoke his vows, but between Roman and Nora, no words were needed. Their story had been written in the quiet moments—the tea brought on cold mornings, the ropes sliced away in dark warehouses, and the promises kept to a little boy.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest announced warmly. “You may kiss the bride.”

Roman pulled Nora into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire garden erupted into loud, joyful applause.

Caleb cheered loudly, tossing his hands into the air, while the golden retriever barked happily beside the front row.

As the sun set over the Towson hills, bathing the estate in a brilliant golden light, Roman and Nora stood on the balcony of their home, looking out over their family.

There were no more secrets. No more fear. No more cold warehouses in the dark.

The maid who had refused to break a promise had found her home, and the mafia boss who had heard her whisper had finally found his soul.
