Chapter 6 - The Dinner of Reckoning

At 8:50 PM, three heavy black armored sedans pulled up to the front entrance of the Calder estate.
Senator Arthur Sterling stepped out into the rain, surrounded by four burly private bodyguards. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive tailored suit and an aura of absolute political authority.
He pushed past the butler at the door, marching straight into the grand dining room.
“Calder!” Sterling’s voice boomed off the high wood-paneled walls. “Where is my daughter?! If you’ve touched a single hair on Evelyn’s head, I will have the federal government burn your docks to the ground!”
At the far end of the long mahogany dining table, Roman Calder sat calmly, cutting a small piece of steak on his plate.
Standing beside him, dressed impeccably and holding a silver serving pitcher, was Nora.
Senator Sterling stopped in his tracks, his eyes darting from Roman to Nora.
“Who is this?” Sterling demanded, sneering at Nora. “The maid you supposedly kidnapped? Is this a joke to you, Roman?”
“Sit down, Arthur,” Roman said smoothly, gesturing to the chair across from him. “Your blood pressure is too high for a man facing retirement.”
“I’m not sitting down with a criminal!” Sterling shouted. “The federal task force arrives in two hours! You are finished!”
Roman wiped his mouth with a linen napkin and set it down.
“Silas,” Roman called out.
The side doors of the dining room opened. Silas walked in carrying a heavy military-grade laptop, placing it directly in the center of the table in front of Senator Sterling.
With a click of a key, the screen lit up.
An audio recording began to play through the high-end speakers of the dining room.
It was Evelyn’s voice—clear, crisp, and terrifyingly malicious:
“Oh, sweetheart. By tomorrow, everyone will believe you did... Do you know why I had to do this, Nora? Because Roman looked at you... A man like Roman Calder doesn't notice a servant unless she’s a threat... The fire will start in ten minutes.”
Senator Sterling’s face went from crimson rage to an ash-gray pale in less than five seconds.
“This... this is an AI synthesis,” Sterling stammered, his fingers trembling as he reached toward the laptop. “This is fake! Evelyn would never—”
“That recording was verified by three independent forensic audio experts two hours ago,” Roman interrupted, his voice dropping into an icy register. “And that’s only the beginning, Arthur.”
Roman tapped the table.
A second file opened on the screen—a master ledger detailing six million dollars in illegal offshore transfers signed by Senator Sterling’s own hand, routing money through Evelyn’s shell companies to pay off dock inspectors and sabotage competitor shipping vessels.
“Your daughter didn't just try to murder my cook, Arthur,” Roman revealed, leaning forward over the table. “She was embezzling from you. She was preparing to pin her entire offshore fraud network on you the moment our wedding was finalized.”
Senator Sterling collapsed heavily into the chair, his hands covering his face as his political empire crumbled before his eyes.
“What... what do you want?” Sterling rasped out through his fingers.
Roman stood up from his chair. He walked around the long mahogany table until he stood beside Nora, placing his hand over hers on the back of his chair.
“You will cancel the federal search warrant,” Roman commanded softly. “You will resign from the Senate citing health reasons by tomorrow morning. And you will sign a full confession regarding Evelyn’s financial crimes.”

Sterling looked up, his eyes hollow. “And Evelyn?”
“Evelyn will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for attempted murder and grand larceny,” Roman said coldly. “Be grateful I am letting her live.”
