Chapter 4 - The Shadow in Pilsen

By late afternoon, against Marco’s strong objections, Bella insisted on returning to her studio apartment in Pilsen to gather her personal belongings, her mother’s old photo albums, and her architecture textbooks.
Marco agreed, but only under one condition: he would accompany her personally.
A black SUV pulled up to the curb of Bella’s dilapidated apartment building. Two security cars parked at the front and back of the alley.
Marco stepped out, dressed in his grey suit, his hand resting casually near the custom holster beneath his jacket.
Bella walked up the creaky, narrow stairs to the third floor, her key turning in the rusty lock.
Inside, the tiny apartment smelled of old radiator heat and lavender soap.
"It's not much," Bella said quietly, holding the door open for Marco.
Marco walked into the room, his long legs making the space seem even smaller. He didn't look down at the worn sofa or the peeling wallpaper. He walked straight to the window, scanning the street below like a hawk.
"It’s honest," Marco said softly, turning back to her. "Honesty is rare in my line of work."
As Bella packed her textbooks into a cardboard box, a loud thud echoed from the hallway outside.
CREAK.
Marco’s posture shifted in a split second. The calm, refined businessman vanished, replaced by a lethal predator.
He pulled a silenced black pistol from his suit jacket, moving with terrifying speed, stepping in front of Bella and pushing her behind his broad frame.
"Stay down," Marco whispered, his voice cold as ice.
The wooden front door burst inward with a splintering crash!
Two men wearing dark tactical masks and holding heavy iron pipes lunged into the small room.
"WHERE IS THE GIRL?!" one shouted.
Marco didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, sidestepping a heavy swing of an iron pipe, grabbing the attacker's wrist and breaking it with a swift, sickening SNAP!
The second man lunged with a hunting knife. Marco caught his throat with his left hand, slamming him violently against the brick wall until the plaster cracked.
The fight lasted less than eight seconds.
Both attackers lay groaning and unconscious on the floor, their weapons sliding across the linoleum.
Marco stood over them, his breath perfectly steady, adjusting his silk cuffs as if he had just closed a business transaction. He turned to the window and tapped his earpiece.
"Matteo. Clean up room 3B. We have two guests from the Moretti faction."
Bella was pressed against the kitchen counter, her hands covering her mouth, her eyes wide with shock. She had never seen violence like that—fast, absolute, and completely ruthless.
Marco turned to her, his gun already holstered back out of sight. He walked over, kneeling down in front of her, his large hands gently touching her trembling shoulders.
"Are you hurt?" Marco asked, his eyes filled with intense concern.
"No..." Bella whispered, her voice shaking. "You... you killed them?"
"They are alive," Marco said quietly. "They came here to kidnap you, Bella. To use you as leverage against my mother and me."
He reached out, his warm thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek.
May you like
"I told you," Marco murmured, his dark eyes looking deep into hers. "You are under my protection now. No one will ever hurt you while I breathe."
Bella looked into his eyes and, for the first time, she didn't feel fear. She felt entirely, completely safe.
