Chapter 4 - The Silent Mansion

The Hawthorne mansion, usually a symbol of grandeur and architectural marvel, felt like a hollow, haunted mausoleum when they returned. The air was thick with the lingering tension of the afternoon's events.
Richard insisted on carrying Noah and Liam inside, but the boys only allowed it if Emily walked directly beside them, holding their hands. The moment they entered the grand foyer, the boys shivered, their eyes darting to the spot where Victoria had stood just hours before.
"We don't want to go to our rooms," Liam whispered, his voice trembling. "Victoria said she hid cameras in our closets to watch us."
Richard felt a fresh spike of anger and guilt. "She... she did what?"
"It’s okay, sweetie," Emily said quickly, shooting Richard a warning look to keep his temper in check around the children. "We’re not going to your rooms tonight. How about we make a giant fort in the living room? Just like we did when it rained last winter?"
The boys' eyes lit up slightly at the suggestion. "With the big fluffy blankets?" Noah asked.
"Yes, the biggest, fluffiest blankets we can find," Emily smiled, her voice a soothing balm. "And we can order pizza. The chocolate chip dessert pizza you like."
While Emily occupied the boys in the living room, Richard immediately set to work. He called his head of security, a trusted former military operative named Marcus, and ordered a complete sweeps of the entire estate for any unauthorized surveillance equipment, listening devices, or hidden entry points Victoria might have established.
By midnight, the living room had been transformed into a massive, secure fortress of pillows and cashmere throws. The triplets, exhausted from the physical and emotional trauma, were fast asleep, sandwiched tightly between Emily and a mountain of pillows.
Richard walked into the room quietly, holding two mugs of tea. He offered one to Emily, who accepted it with a nod. He sat down on the floor a few feet away, staring at his sleeping sons.
"Marcus found three hidden cameras," Richard said, his voice barely a whisper. "One in their playroom, one in their hallway, and one in their closet. She... she was monitoring them. Probably looking for any leverage or excuse to paint them as unstable to convince me to send them away."
Emily took a sip of the tea, her expression grim. "She was planning this for months, Richard. She hated that they took your attention away from her. Every time you were away on business trips, she would drop her sweet act. She would lock them in their rooms, turn off the Wi-Fi so they couldn't call you, and tell them that if they complained, she would make sure you hated them."
Richard closed his eyes, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "Why didn't they tell me?"
"Because they were terrified!" Emily said, her whisper fierce and sharp. "They are five years old, Richard! And you... you were always working, always busy, always trusting Victoria. When they tried to bring it up once, you told them to stop making up stories and respect their future mother. Do you remember that?"
Richard felt a knife twist in his chest. He did remember. He had thought the boys were just acting out, struggling to adjust to a new maternal figure. He had dismissed their tears as childish manipulation.
"I am a terrible father," Richard whispered, burying his face in his hands.
May you like
"You're not a terrible father," Emily said, her tone softening slightly as she looked at his genuine despair. "But you've been an absent one. You thought providing them with a mansion, toys, and a high-society stepmother was what they needed. But they don't care about your billions, Richard. They just want you."
She looked down at the sleeping triplets. "And right now, you have a lot of work to do to earn their trust back. And mine."
