Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Court

The day of the deposition arrived, a cold, grey morning that matched the solemnity of the occasion. The corporate law offices of Hawthorne Technologies were chosen as neutral ground, though the atmosphere felt like a battleground.
Victoria Lane sat across the polished mahogany table, dressed in a standard orange correctional jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her wrists cuffed. Despite her fallen state, her eyes still flashed with the same arrogant, venomous pride. Her team of high-priced defense attorneys sat on either side of her.
Emily sat at the opposite end, flanked by Richard and their lead counsel, Arthur.
"Let the record show," Victoria's lead attorney began, "that we believe the plaintiff's key witness, Emily Carter, has a strong financial motive to exaggerate the events of that afternoon. She has recently been awarded a multi-million-dollar trust fund by Mr. Hawthorne."
"Objection," Arthur said calmly. "The trust fund was established after the event as a response to the profound negligence and false accusations orchestrate by your client. It was not a bribe; it was restitution."
Victoria leaned forward, her chains rattling against the table. "You think you're so clever, don't you, Emily?" she hissed, ignoring her lawyer's warnings to remain silent. "You played the victim, ran into the street with those crying brats, and now you’ve got a billionaire wrapped around your little finger. You're just a gold-digger who got lucky."
Emily didn't flinch. She looked directly into Victoria's cold eyes, her voice steady, calm, and filled with an undeniable authority.
"I loved those boys when I was making minimum wage and scrubbing your muddy footprints off the marble floors, Victoria," Emily said, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "I loved them when you were ignoring them, when you were planning to send them away, and when you locked them in a suffocating greenhouse to die so you could secure a payout. I didn't need a single cent from Richard to risk my life for them. Can you say the same about your relationship with him?"
Victoria’s face contorted with rage. She lunged across the table, her handcuffs clattering violently. "You little—!"
"Sit down, Victoria!" Richard’s voice boomed through the room, cold and absolute. The sheer authority in his tone made even the defense lawyers flinch.
Richard leaned forward, his eyes locking onto his former fiancée. "You are finished, Victoria. We have the security footage. We have the chemical analysis of the fertilizer on the boys' skin. We have your financial records showing your family's bankruptcy and your calls to overseas boarding schools. And we have Emily’s logs. You are going to prison for a very long time. And I will personally ensure that every single day of your sentence is served."
Victoria stared at him, the realization of her complete defeat finally washing over her. She sank back into her chair, her face pale, the manic energy draining from her body as her lawyers frantically whispered to her to stay quiet.
As they walked out of the corporate building into the crisp afternoon air, Emily felt a massive weight lift from her shoulders. It was finally over. The threat was gone.
Richard looked down at her, a gentle smile on his face. "You were incredible in there."
"I just told the truth," Emily smiled, wrapping her coat tighter around herself.
May you like
"No," Richard said softly, taking her hand. "You stood up for my family when I was too blind to do it myself. You are the strongest woman I have ever met."
Emily didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she squeezed his hand, a silent promise of the future they were building together.
