Chapter 3 - The Midnight Ledger

The hours between 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM in a neonatal intensive care unit usually dragged like centuries. But for Rachel, time seemed to fold in on itself, turning into an agonizing suspension between two opposing realities.

In her arms, little Leo remained peacefully asleep. His fragile body had warmed against hers, his breathing so light she had to check his chest movements every few minutes to make sure he was still with her.

Across the room, Daniel Russo sat in the leather armchair, watching them with an intensity that never wavered. He hadn't touched his phone, hadn't called his corporate offices, and hadn't slept a wink. He sat like a sentinel guarding a treasure he had almost lost.

At 3:15 AM, the heavy oak door clicked open an inch, and Mateo Cruz slipped silently into the suite. He walked over to Daniel, leaning down to murmur quietly in his ear.

“The asset in the south district has been handled,” Mateo said, his voice a low rumble designed not to disturb the baby. “Clean execution. No witnesses. The message has been delivered to the rest of the street runners.”

Rachel felt the blood drain entirely from her face.

She kept her eyes fixed on Leo’s tiny eyelashes, but every muscle in her body went rigid. The asset in the south district. Her brother Tommy lived in the south district. Tommy, who had missed his payment window at midnight. Tommy, whose gambling debts had been funneled through a front company owned by Russo Logistics.

No. No, please God, no, she chanted silently in her mind, fighting the sudden urge to hyperventilate. He wouldn't. He didn't know.

Daniel nodded slowly, his expression devoid of emotion. “Make sure his family is notified if there are any dependents, but keep our name clean. I have enough blood on my hands this month.”

“Understood, boss,” Mateo replied, casting a brief glance toward Rachel before turning to leave.

Rachel’s mind raced with the terrifying speed of a runaway train. Her brother was dead—or moments away from it. The billionaire sitting across from her, the man who was currently looking at her with profound gratitude and offering her anything in the world, had just casually ordered a human being executed like clearing a piece of trash off a desk.

And she was standing here holding his son, keeping him alive with her own heartbeat.

“Is something wrong, Rachel?” Daniel’s deep voice cut through the silence of the room. He had noticed the subtle tremor in her hands.

Rachel swallowed hard, forcing her throat to open, and looked up. She channeled every ounce of professional detachment she possessed, masking the hurricane of grief and rage tearing her apart inside.

“I’m just tired, Mr. Russo,” she said, her voice remarkably steady. “It’s been a long shift.”

Daniel stood up, walking over to her with slow, deliberate steps. He stopped two feet away, respectful of the sleeping infant between them. “You haven't slept in twenty-four hours. Let me take him for a moment. You can sit down.”

“No,” Rachel said quickly, perhaps a bit too sharply. “If he wakes up now, his nervous system will reset the sensory overload. I have to hold him until shift change.”

Daniel looked at her for a long, searching moment, as if trying to read the hidden layers behind her dark eyes. He didn't push. He simply reached out and adjusted the corner of the sterile blanket draped over Leo’s back, his large fingers brushing lightly against Rachel’s wrist. His skin was warm, but to Rachel, it felt like ice.

“You are a remarkable woman, Rachel,” Daniel said quietly. “When this suite opens up tomorrow, I’m doubling your salary and assigning a permanent detail to your apartment building. Nobody touches you while you’re under my protection.”

Protection. The word tasted like poison.

“Thank you, Mr. Russo,” Rachel whispered, staring straight ahead at the wall. “I need to check his vitals now.”

May you like

Daniel nodded, stepping back to give her space. But as he turned away to walk back to his chair, Rachel made a silent, desperate vow.

She wasn't going to accept his protection. She was going to find out where Mateo Cruz had sent his men tonight. And if her brother was truly gone, she was going to use every single secret hidden inside the Russo fortress to bring the billionaire’s empire crashing down around him—starting with the baby sleeping peacefully against her chest.
