Chapter 4 - The Discovery in the Ledger

By 7:00 AM, the morning shift nurses arrived to relieve the night staff, their eyes wide with shock when they stepped into Suite A and found Leo Russo sleeping soundly in a bassinet while Daniel Russo sat drinking black coffee without a trace of the demonic fury that had terrorized the hospital for two weeks.
Rachel handed over her patient charts with practiced professionalism, her hands no longer trembling. She had spent the last three hours mentally cataloging every single piece of information she could use.
When she walked out of the hospital into the gray, drizzling Chicago morning, she didn't head toward her apartment. She drove straight to Tommy’s apartment on 4th and Wabash.
The front door was unlocked.
Rachel pushed it open, her heart hammering against her ribs. The apartment was empty. There was no sign of a struggle, no blood, no police tape. But on the cracked linoleum kitchen table sat a burner phone flashing a blinking red light, beside a folded piece of paper bearing a handwritten address in Riverside: The Ironworks Yard, Warehouse 4.
She didn't call the police. She knew the police in Chicago didn't touch Russo properties without a federal warrant, and federal warrants took weeks.
Instead, she remembered something Mateo Cruz had left behind on the nurse’s station counter during a late-night phone call two nights ago—a sleek, encrypted tablet with a titanium casing, left unattended for precisely four minutes while Mateo rushed into Suite A to deliver a status report.
Rachel had slipped it into her oversized nursing tote bag on a whim, telling herself it was just hospital property left behind. Now, sitting in her parked car outside Tommy’s abandoned apartment, she pulled the heavy tablet from her bag and pressed the power button.
It didn't ask for a standard four-digit passcode. It required a retinal scan or a complex cryptographic key.
Damn it, she cursed under her breath.
Just as she was about to toss it back into the bag, her phone buzzed. It was an incoming text from an unknown number.
“If you want to know if your brother is breathing, check the financial ledger on the second partition of the tablet. Password is the date of the Lake Shore Drive ambush: 1024.”
Rachel froze. Her blood ran cold.
She stared at the screen. Someone knew. Someone inside the Russo inner circle knew who she was, knew about Tommy, and was actively feeding her the keys to the kingdom.
Without wasting another second, she tapped the screen, entered 1024, and watched as the titanium tablet unlocked with a soft, melodic chime.
The screen opened to a secure encrypted database labeled RUSSO LOGISTICS - INTERNAL ASSETS & ACCOUNTS.
She tapped the second partition: LIQUIDATION & DEBT RECOVERY.
A list of names appeared, sorted by outstanding balances and execution status. Scrolling down past dozens of unfortunate gamblers, loan defaulters, and corporate rivals, her eyes locked onto a single entry highlighted in red:
THOMAS JENKINS – DEBT: $50,000. STATUS: REASSIGNED. NOTE FROM D. RUSSO: “Hold execution pending the nurse’s shift report. If the boy sleeps through the night, clear the debt. If he dies, throw him in the river.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
Her brother wasn't dead. His life—and his death—had literally been used as a bargaining chip tied to how well she performed her job keeping Daniel Russo’s son alive.

She stared at the glowing screen as the cold, merciless reality of the billionaire’s world settled over her like a shroud. Daniel Russo hadn’t just hired her; he had tested her, judged her, and kept her brother’s heartbeat tethered to his son’s pulse.
And now, she had less than twelve hours before her next shift started, armed with enough financial evidence to dismantle the entire Russo freight empire in a single federal indictment.
