Chapter 7 - The Unseen Evidence

The sound of paper tearing echoed through the small conference room like a gunshot.

Grant tossed the shredded halves of the legal document into the trash can near the door. He turned to me, his expression unreadable, hardened back into the cold iron of a man preparing for war.

“Get your coat,” Grant said.

I blinked, confused. “What?”

“I’m dropping the charges,” Grant said, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping a speed-dial button. “Pendelton!” he barked into the speaker. “Instruct the desk sergeant that I am declining to press charges against Emma Vance. Tell them it was a domestic misunderstanding and I want her released immediately.”

Within ten minutes, the police paperwork was processed. My belongings were returned to me in a clear plastic bag, and I walked out of the North Castle Police Station into the crisp midnight air.

Grant was waiting beside his black Maybach at the curb. His private driver opened the door as we approached.

“Get in,” Grant commanded.

“Where are we going?” I asked, holding my canvas tote tightly against my side. “Back to the estate?”

“No,” Grant said, sliding into the leather back seat beside me. “The gala is over. I sent the guests home twenty minutes ago. Renata is at the house with Marcus and her personal assistant. If I walk in there right now and confront her based solely on your word, her lawyers will have her scrubbed clean before morning. I need proof, Emma. Irrefutable proof.”

“How are we going to get proof?” I asked as the Maybach pulled away from the curb, accelerating smoothly onto the dark highway. “She covered up the burn with ointment. She convinced security she was the victim.”

Grant reached over and opened a small, built-in refrigerator unit in the center console, pulling out a small black flash drive.

“Three months ago, after Lily’s speech therapist expressed concern about her slow progress, I had a private surveillance firm install hidden micro-cameras throughout the nursery wing and master suite,” Grant revealed.

My jaw dropped. “You have cameras in the house?”

“Only in the hallways and private study,” Grant clarified, his face dark. “I didn't put them inside the bathrooms or Lily’s bedroom out of respect for privacy. But the hallway outside the master bathroom... that camera catches every sound and every shadow passing through those double doors.”

My heart began to race. “The audio! The camera has audio?”

“High-definition directional microphones,” Grant nodded. “I haven't checked the footage yet. I didn't want to believe it. Every time Pendelton brought up security audits, I told him it was unnecessary because Renata was managing the house.” He gripped the flash drive so hard his knuckles went white. “I was a fool, Emma. A blind, arrogant fool.”

“Don't blame yourself,” I said quietly. “Abusers are experts at hiding behind elegance. She made sure you only saw the perfect fiancée.”

Grant looked out the tinted window at the passing streetlights. “We’re going to my corporate offices in Manhattan. I have an encrypted server room there where we can review the raw footage from today without anyone at the estate knowing we’re watching.”

Thirty minutes later, the Maybach pulled into the underground parking garage of Callahan Tower in Midtown Manhattan.

We rode a private glass elevator up to the 50th floor. The corporate headquarters was completely dark, silent, and empty, the vast glass windows offering a dizzying view of the glowing New York City skyline below.

Grant led me into a sleek, glass-walled conference room equipped with a massive wall-mounted monitor. He plugged the flash drive into a console, and the screen flickered to life, displaying a grid of four camera feeds from the Callahan estate.

“Select today’s date,” I said, stepping up beside him. “5:45 PM. The camera covering the second-floor master wing hallway.”

Grant tapped the keyboard.

The screen zoomed in on a high-definition feed of the grand marble hallway outside the master suite bathroom. The timestamp in the corner read: 17:48:12.

On the screen, I saw myself walk past carrying the basket of folded laundry. A few seconds later, I stopped in the middle of the hallway, dropping the basket as the smell of burning hair hit me.

“Fast forward ten seconds,” I whispered.

Grant hit the forward key.

The audio feed crackled through the conference room’s surround-sound speakers.

“I told you to stop moving, you little mute!” Renata’s voice rang out, crystal clear, sharp, and dripping with pure, unadulterated venom. “Grant wants you perfect tonight! And if you can't be perfect, you can at least learn to be obedient. Flinch again and I'll get closer to your ear next time. Understood?”

A sharp ssssszt sound followed, accompanied by a muffled, breathless gasp from Lily.

Grant stood frozen beside me.

His breathing stopped entirely. His face went completely white, every muscle in his body locking in place as the cruel, cold words of his fiancée echoed off the glass walls of his corporate boardroom.

On the screen, the video showed me bursting through the double doors, slamming into Renata, and scooping Lily into my arms. The audio captured Renata’s screech of rage, followed by her calculated, chilling laugh as she threatened my sick mother.

“Who do you think Grant is going to believe?” Renata’s voice sneered from the speakers. “His future wife, or the desperate charity case he hired to scrub his toilets?”

May you like

Grant slammed his fist down onto the conference table with such immense force that the glass console cracked beneath his knuckles.

“My God...” Grant choked out, falling back into a leather chair, burying his face in his hands. “My God... what have I done?”
