Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Dawn

The sun was just beginning to peek over the Hudson River, casting a pale, orange light across the manicured lawns of the Callahan estate.

A light mist hung over the long gravel driveway as the black Maybach pulled up to the main entrance, followed closely by three unmarked black SUVs carrying Grant’s corporate security team and Arthur Pendelton.

Grant stepped out of the car. He had changed into a sharp charcoal suit, his face set like reinforced steel. He looked like a man heading directly into battle.

I stepped out beside him, holding my tote bag.

“Stay behind me, Emma,” Grant said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Marcus and the estate guards have already been relieved of duty. My corporate team took over the gates ten minutes ago.”

We walked up the stone steps. Grant opened the heavy double doors with his private key card.

The foyer was dead quiet. The flower arrangements from last night’s gala were still sitting on the side tables, looking slightly wilted in the morning light.

Down the hallway, the sound of soft piano music was playing from the morning room.

Grant walked down the marble corridor, his polished leather shoes striking the stone with slow, deliberate thuds. I followed two paces behind him, my heart hammering against my ribs.

We rounded the corner into the sunlit morning room.

Renata was sitting at a glass table near the French doors, wearing a pink silk robe, sipping espresso from a china cup while scrolling through a tablet. Beside her, sitting on a low wooden chair, was Lily.

Lily looked exhausted, her small eyes heavy, her honey-colored hair pulled back into a tight braid that attempted to hide the missing patch near her temple.

Renata looked up, a bright, cheerful smile immediately spreading across her face when she saw Grant.

“Grant, darling!” Renata chirped, setting her cup down. “You were gone all night! Pendelton said you had an emergency corporate board meeting in the city. Did everything get resolved?”

She stood up, reaching her arms out to embrace him.

Grant didn't move. He stood ten feet away, staring at her with eyes so cold they could have frozen boiling water.

Renata’s smile faltered slightly as she noticed me standing behind him. Her eyes narrowed into tiny slits. “Why is she here? Grant, I thought Pendelton took care of that crazy maid last night!”

“Sit down, Renata,” Grant said softly.

“Grant, what is going on?” Renata’s tone turned defensive, her chin tilting up. “Why are you looking at me like that? And why is this woman in my house after she attacked me?”

Grant pulled an iPad from his briefcase and set it flat on the glass table between her espresso cup and tablet. He tapped the screen once.

The high-definition audio recording from the master bathroom began to play at maximum volume.

“I told you to stop moving, you little mute! Grant wants you perfect tonight... Flinch again and I'll get closer to your ear next time. Understood?”

Renata’s face transformed in an instant.

The soft, elegant, aristocratic composure crumbled, wiped away as if it had never existed. Her skin went sickly grey, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing terror as her own venomous voice echoed through the sunlit morning room.

She took a fast step back, bumping into her chair. “Grant... Grant, wait... that’s... that’s not what it sounds like—”

“Shut your mouth,” Grant commanded, his voice dropping so low it felt like a physical threat.

Lily, sitting on the low chair, looked from the iPad up to her father. For the first time in two years, a flicker of understanding crossed her small face.

“You burned my child,” Grant said, taking one step toward Renata. “You held a hot iron against my motherless daughter’s head, and then you used my name, my money, and my lawyers to throw a twenty-four-year-old girl in jail for trying to protect her.”

“Grant, please!” Renata burst into frantic, hysterical tears, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, reaching out to grab his trousers. “She was frustrating me! She wouldn't listen! I’ve been under so much pressure organizing the gala, managing the estate, dealing with your work schedule! I lost my temper for one second! I swear to God, it was just one second!”

Grant pulled his leg back, stepping completely away from her grasp as if she were a venomous snake.

“Pendelton,” Grant called out without looking back.

Arthur Pendelton stepped into the morning room, flanked by two armed corporate security officers. He held a thick legal folder in his hand.

“Miss Cole,” Pendelton said, his voice entirely devoid of the warmth he had shown me earlier. “You are officially trespassing on private property. Your engagement to Mr. Callahan is terminated effective immediately. The prenup agreement you signed three months ago contains an explicit morals and conduct clause which forfeits all financial settlements, allowances, and gifts.”

“You can’t do this!” Renata shrieked from the floor, her hair falling wild across her face. “Grant! I loved you! I gave up my life for you!”

“You didn't love me,” Grant said, looking down at her with pure disgust. “You loved my bank account. And you hated my daughter because she reminded you that I loved someone else before you.”

He turned to the security officers. “Escort her to the main gate. She has ten minutes to pack her personal clothing from the guest house. If she touches anything else on this property, press grand larceny charges immediately.”

The two guards stepped forward, grabbing Renata beneath her arms and hauling her up off the floor.

“Grant! Grant, please!” she screamed, kicking her heels against the stone floor as she was dragged down the hallway. “You’ll regret this! You’ll never find anyone else! You’re a cold, unlovable bastard! Grant!”

Her shrieks faded as the double front doors slammed shut behind her, leaving the morning room in total, peaceful silence.
