Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

At 7:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a freezing, foggy city.
My mother was resting comfortably in a private room at the hospital under the protection of a court-ordered medical proxy that Daniel had rushed through a judge at 5:00 AM.
Meanwhile, Evan and Marissa were living in a high-rise luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Atlantic City—a place they had rented just three weeks ago using Mom’s stolen equity.
Daniel drove us to the building in silence. Joining us in a second unmarked vehicle was Agent Marcus Vance and two detectives from the County Sheriff’s Department.
We rode the mirror-lined elevator to the twelfth floor. The hallway smelled of expensive perfume and fresh paint.
Daniel knocked on door 1204.
A few moments later, the door swung open. Evan stood there wearing a silk robe, holding a cup of espresso. His face was flushed, his hair slightly messy. Behind him, the spacious living room was filled with expensive leather furniture, brand-new designer shopping bags, and empty champagne bottles.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Evan sneered, looking at me. “I told you, Chloe, Mom signed the house over fair and square. If you’re here begging for cash—”
“Evan Vance,” Agent Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling his gold badge from his leather jacket. “Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Task Force. Step away from the door.”
Evan’s face went instantly pale. The espresso cup slipped from his fingers, shattering on the hardwood floor and splashing dark coffee across his bare feet.
“W-what?” Evan stammered, taking a step back. “FBI? This is a family matter! My mother gave me Power of Attorney!”
Marissa walked out of the bedroom, wrapped in a plush towel, her hair dripping wet. “Evan, who is at the—?”
She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw two uniformed Sheriff’s deputies step into her living room with hand-cuffed belts and search warrants.
“Marissa Vance,” Agent Marcus announced coldly. “By order of the United States District Court, all bank accounts, credit lines, and assets associated with you and Evan Vance have been frozen under federal asset forfeiture statutes pending investigation into Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, and Conspiracy to Commit Elder Abuse.”
“Frozen?!” Marissa shrieked, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. “You can't freeze our accounts! We just closed on our new Jaguar this morning! My card was declined at the coffee shop, I thought it was a bank glitch!”
“It wasn't a glitch, Mrs. Vance,” Daniel said, stepping into the apartment, his face as cold and unyielding as granite. “It was me.”

Evan stared at Daniel, his eyes wide with a mix of terror and sudden realization. “Daniel... you... you did this? You’re just a tax guy!”
“I was a federal financial investigator for twelve years, Evan,” Daniel said quietly, leaning in so only Evan could hear his next words. “And you left my mother-in-law to freeze under a bridge for four hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Every single cent you spent is now a separate federal count.”
