Chapter 7 - The Verdict and Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When they returned to the courtroom, the foreman stood up, holding the official verdict sheets.

“On Count 1: First-Degree Grand Larceny—Guilty.” “On Count 2: Wire Fraud and Conspiracy—Guilty.” “On Count 3: Aggravated Elder Abuse and Neglect—Guilty.” “On Count 4: Forgery in the First Degree—Guilty.”

Marissa broke into loud, hysterical sob, slumping over the defense table. Evan sat frozen, his jaw slack, staring blankly at the judge.

Judge Harrison did not wait to issue the sentencing. He called both defendants to stand before the bench immediately.

“Evan Vance and Marissa Vance,” Judge Harrison’s voice thundered across the courtroom. “In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of such cold, calculated, and heartless cruelty. You targeted a vulnerable woman—your own mother—when she was at her weakest moment. You stripped her of her home, her dignity, and her security, leaving her to die in the cold so you could live in luxury.”

The judge adjusted his glasses and looked down at his notes.

“I sentence you, Evan Vance, to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole for fifteen years.”

Evan gasped, his knees buckling. Two bailiffs grabbed his arms to keep him standing.

“I sentence you, Marissa Vance, to fourteen years in state prison for your direct role in the conspiracy and financial exploitation.”

As the bailiffs clamped heavy iron handcuffs around their wrists and ankle chains around their feet, Evan turned toward my mother, crying uncontrollably.

“Mom! Please! Tell them to stop! I’m your son! I made a mistake!” Evan wailed as he was dragged toward the side holding cell. “Mom! Forgive me!”

My mother stood up slowly from her bench. She looked at her son as he was led away in chains.

“I forgive you as my son, Evan,” Mom said softly, her voice filled with deep, heartbreaking pity. “But you must face the justice you earned.”
