Chapter 7 - The Hive of Vipers

By midnight, the storm had reached its peak over the city.

Inside the top-floor penthouse of the St. Regis Hotel, Marcus Vale sat in an armchair of dark leather, sipping an ancient scotch. He was a man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, with silver hair, sharp features, and eyes as cold and grey as slate.

Standing near the fireplace, shivering despite the warmth of the room, was Vanessa Cole.

Her silk dress was rumpled, her makeup ruined by tears. Sitting on the couch beside her was her brother, Julian, looking dark and dangerous, his hands wrapped around a glass of bourbon.

"You let a housewife dismantle three years of work in thirty-six hours," Marcus said, his voice quiet, smooth, and utterly terrifying.

"Marcus, please!" Vanessa cried out, taking an instinctual step back. "Daniel promised me he had full control over his home! He told me she was completely oblivious! How was I supposed to know she was a trained forensic accountant tracking his servers?!"

"You were supposed to know because it was your job to know," Marcus replied, setting his glass down with a soft, deliberate click. "You were placed in that company to monitor the server transitions. Instead, you spent your time buying diamond bracelets at Bellamy Jewelers and leaving voice notes on a shared family account."

Julian Cole stood up from the couch, stepping between Marcus and his sister. "Look, Vale, we didn't come here to be lectured. Daniel signed over his shares to the Hargrove Trust this afternoon. The payroll cleared, but the main accounts are still frozen by court order. My dock workers need their payment for the steel shipment by tomorrow noon, or they walk."

Marcus looked at Julian as if he were an annoying insect. "Your steel shipment is useless now, Julian. The moment Claire Hargrove took control of the voting stock, she initiated a third-party structural audit of Project Ridgeway."

Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. "An audit? If they test that steel—"

"If they test that steel," Marcus interrupted coldly, "the City Inspector will issue a stop-work order, federal marshals will raid Vance Construction’s headquarters, and the paper trail leads directly from your brother’s shell company straight to my private foundation."

Julian’s face darkened, his fists clenching at his sides. "Then we end her, Marcus. She’s staying at her father’s old estate in Oakridge. It’s isolated. I can take three guys up there tonight—"

"Do you think you are in an eighties action movie, Julian?" Marcus snapped, his grey eyes flashing with contempt. "The Hargrove Estate is currently under twenty-four-hour private security surveillance authorized by Evelyn Hart. If you step foot on that property, you’ll be shot before you reach the front gates, and the media will have a field day connecting your dead body to my firm."

Vanessa sank onto the edge of the sofa, weeping softly. "Then what do we do? We’re ruined! Daniel has nothing left, the company is gone, and the FBI is monitoring our bank accounts!"

Marcus stood up slowly, buttoning his bespoke suit jacket. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the storm-drenched city below.

"Daniel Vance was a useful fool, but he was always disposable," Marcus said smoothly. "Claire Hargrove thinks she won because she forced him to sign a piece of paper. She thinks she’s protected behind her father’s walls."

He turned back to look at Vanessa and Julian, a sinister, calculating smile spreading across his face.

"Claire wants to play the brilliant forensic accountant," Marcus continued. "She wants to hunt for ledgers and encryption keys. So we are going to give her exactly what she’s looking for."

"What are you talking about?" Julian asked gruffly.

"The original master encryption key for Arthur Hargrove’s software isn't on Vance Construction’s servers," Marcus revealed. "It was placed into a secure safety deposit box at the Central National Bank twelve years ago under a joint signature clause requiring two living heirs."

Vanessa looked up, her eyes widening. "Two heirs?"

"Arthur Hargrove... and Daniel Vance," Marcus smiled wickedly. "When Arthur died, Daniel became the sole surviving signatory on that box. Claire doesn't know the box exists. But tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, Daniel Vance is going to walk into that bank, open that box, and hand that master key to me."

"Daniel won't do it!" Vanessa insisted. "He’s terrified of her! She threatened to send him to prison!"

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek black smartphone. He tapped a button and held it out to Vanessa.

"Daniel will do whatever I tell him to do," Marcus said softly. "Because if he doesn't, I will release the audio recordings of him ordering the sub-standard steel for Project Ridgeway directly to the state murder task force."

Marcus looked at Julian. "Get Daniel out of his motel room. Bring him to my private motorcade by 8:00 AM. Tomorrow morning, we retrieve Arthur Hargrove’s final secret—and then we ensure Claire Hargrove never speaks to a federal prosecutor again."
