Chapter 8 - The Bait and the Trap

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a crisp, cold light over the granite facade of the Central National Bank in the heart of the financial district.

At 8:45 AM, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb.

Daniel Vance stepped out, flanked by Julian Cole and Marcus Vale’s chief security officer, a massive man named Barrett. Daniel looked broken, his clothes ill-fitting, his skin pale and slick with nervous sweat.

"Remember the plan, Daniel," Barrett whispered harshly in his ear as they walked up the grand stone steps. "You go down to the vault, you sign the ledger, you open box 412, and you bring the black drive straight out to the car. If you try to slip away or call your lawyer, Julian is waiting down the street outside your son’s school."

Daniel swallowed a lump of pure terror, nodding obediently. "I understand. Just don't hurt Noah. Please."

"Just get the drive," Barrett growled, shoving him through the revolving glass doors.

Inside the grand marble lobby of Central National Bank, the atmosphere was quiet and solemn. Daniel walked over to the vault desk, his legs feeling like lead.

"Good morning, Mr. Vance," the elderly vault attendant greeted him politely, looking at his identification. "It’s been a very long time since you visited box 412."

"Yes," Daniel rasped out. "I... I need to access it today."

"Of course. Please sign the signature verification log right here."

Daniel signed his name with a trembling hand. The attendant verified the signature against the digital system, nodded, and picked up a heavy master key.

"Follow me, sir."

They walked down the marble staircase into the subterranean vault room—a massive, reinforced steel chamber lined with thousands of gleaming silver deposit boxes.

The attendant inserted his key into box 412, then stepped back. "Insert your key, Mr. Vance."

Daniel pulled a small, tarnished brass key from his pocket—the key he had kept hidden in his desk drawer for six years without ever opening the box. He inserted it, turned it, and pulled the long metal safety container out from the wall.

He carried it over to a private viewing booth, closing the curtain behind him.

With shaking hands, Daniel lifted the metal lid.

Inside lay a single leather-bound journal belonging to Arthur Hargrove, a sheaf of yellowed paper, and a black metallic flash drive stamped with the initials A.H.

Daniel reached down to grab the drive.

"I wouldn't touch that if I were you, Daniel."

Daniel gasped, whipping his head around.

Stepping out from behind the velvet curtain of the adjacent booth was Claire.

She wore a dark grey wool coat, her arms folded across her chest, her eyes fixed on him with calm, absolute authority. Standing right behind her were two men in dark suits wearing brass badges on their belts—Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Claire?!" Daniel choked out, dropping the lid of the box with a loud metallic clang. "How... how did you know I was here?!"

"Because I know Marcus Vale better than you do, Daniel," Claire said softly, stepping into the booth. "When Marcus realized I took control of Vance Construction, he knew his only remaining play was Arthur’s original encryption key. And I knew the only place Arthur would ever hide it was in the vault he opened the day I turned eighteen."

"Claire, listen to me!" Daniel cried, falling onto his knees on the cold vault floor, tears streaming down his face. "They forced me to come here! Julian Cole threatened Noah! He said he was outside Noah’s school!"

Claire looked down at him with a mixture of pity and contempt. She reached into her coat and pulled out her phone, holding up the screen.

It displayed a live camera feed from the gates of Noah’s school. Standing beside Noah’s teacher was Martha, along with two armed private security officers and a uniformed police officer. Noah was happily swinging on a playset in the background, completely safe.

"Noah is under twenty-four-hour police protection, Daniel," Claire said firmly. "Julian Cole isn't standing outside his school. Julian Cole was arrested fifteen minutes ago in the parking garage across the street while trying to intercept your car."

Daniel stared at the screen, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief.

"You... you set a trap," Daniel whispered.

"No," Claire corrected gently. "Marcus Vale set a trap. I just made sure he was the one who walked into it."

She looked at the two federal agents behind her. "Agent Miller, the metallic drive in that box contains the complete source code and extortion files Marcus Vale used to manipulate Vance Construction."

Agent Miller stepped forward, carefully securing the drive into an anti-static evidence bag. "Mr. Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal infrastructure fraud, extortion, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the agents pulled Daniel up to his feet and snapped handcuffs onto his wrists, Daniel looked back at Claire, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic regret.

"Claire... please," Daniel whimpered as he was led away. "I’m sorry. I was stupid. I loved you... I really did!"

Claire stood alone in the quiet, metallic subterranean vault. She looked down at her father’s leather-bound journal resting inside the safety box.

She reached out, gently running her fingers over Arthur Hargrove’s handwritten initials on the cover.

May you like

"I know you did, Daniel," Claire whispered into the quiet room. "In the beginning. But you loved yourself more."

She picked up her father’s journal, tucked it safely into her arm, and walked out of the vault into the bright morning sun.
