Chapter 5: The Corporate Takeover

The next six months were a blur of calculated destruction and reconstruction.
Bridget worked alongside Dante, not as a secretary, but as a partner. She audited the syndicates, identified their weaknesses, and helped Dante dismantle their operations without firing a single shot. They didn't need to; they simply used the truth to bankrupt their enemies.
They moved back to New York, but not to the glass office in TriBeCa. They moved to a private building that was as secure as a fortress but felt like a home.
Barnaby the cat was currently the CEO of the living room, sprawled across a leather couch that Dante had purchased specifically because it matched the cat’s fur.
One evening, as they were reviewing the final divestment of the Moretti holdings—turning the logistics empire into a legitimate, clean import/export firm—Dante looked at her.
"We're almost done," he said. "The transition is complete. The Moretti name is no longer associated with the darker side of the business."
Bridget looked at the screen, where the final legal filings were waiting to be signed. "What does that mean for us?"
Dante stood up and walked around the desk, pulling her into his arms. "It means I have no more excuses to keep you in this office. I have no more excuses to put you in danger. We can go anywhere. We can be anyone."

Bridget leaned her head on his shoulder. "I think I want to be someone who doesn't have to carry a fire extinguisher into a gala."
Dante chuckled, the sound deep and resonant in his chest. "I think I can arrange that."
