Chapter 5 - The Freezing of Assets

The following Monday, the financial execution phase of Claire’s strategy went into full effect. Under Naomi’s precise direction, teams of forensic accountants and state marshals moved swiftly to secure every remaining asset connected to Ethan Carter’s name.

Claire sat in Naomi’s high-rise office, watching a live digital ledger display on a large monitor. The screen showed a comprehensive list of properties, luxury vehicles, and investment portfolios being systematically locked down.

"We’ve secured the Austin commercial property," Naomi reported, clicking her pen. "The asset freeze caught it just as he was attempting to transfer the title to a private buyer in Houston. We also seized his offshore account in Panama. It only had three hundred thousand dollars left in it, but every dollar will be returned to the Carter Holdings employee retirement fund to cover the deficit he created."

"And what about the luxury cars?" Claire asked, her expression neutral.

"The sports cars he bought with company funds have been impounded," Naomi said with a small smile. "They will be sold at public auction next month. The proceeds are legally mandated to cover your legal fees and the cost of the forensic audit."

The door to the inner office opened, and an assistant stepped in, holding a heavily stamped document. "Ms. Reed, the district judge just signed the absolute foreclosure order on the secondary property Ethan purchased for Veronica Vance in North Dallas. The eviction notice has been served."

Claire looked at the document. It was a luxury townhouse that Ethan had bought using a secret line of credit tied to Carter Holdings’ corporate accounts. It was the place where he and his mistress had spent their weekends while Claire was out of town, managing the family’s philanthropic endeavors.

"I want to be there when she leaves," Claire said quietly, standing up and smoothing her jacket.

"Claire, you don't need to subject yourself to that drama," Naomi said protectively. "The marshals can handle it."

"I don't want to watch the drama, Naomi," Claire replied, her eyes flashing with a cold, unyielding power. "I want her to see the face of the woman she thought she could replace. I want her to understand that in this city, you cannot build a life on the stolen foundation of another woman’s family."

Thirty minutes later, Claire’s black sedan pulled up to the curb outside the elegant brick townhouse in North Dallas. Two county deputy sheriffs stood by the front door, while two moving men were busy loading boxes of designer clothing and expensive furniture into the back of an unmarked van.

Veronica Vance stood on the driveway, wrapped in a cheap coat, crying hysterically into her phone as she watched her belongings being packed away. Her glamorous facade had completely vanished; her hair was unwashed, and her face was red and swollen from days of panic.

As Claire stepped out of the vehicle, Veronica caught sight of her. She dropped her phone into the grass, her expression shifting from sorrow to pure, desperate venom.

"You think you're so superior, Claire!" Veronica screamed, trying to step toward her before a deputy sheriff calmly placed a hand on her shoulder, blocking her path. "You ruined my life! You took my house! You took my money! Ethan loved me! He hated you! He stayed with you only because he felt sorry for you!"

Claire stood perfectly still, three feet away, looking at the young woman with a calm, analytical detachment that made Veronica’s shouting seem pathetic and hollow.

"He didn't stay with me because he felt sorry for me, Veronica," Claire said, her voice carrying a chilling clarity across the quiet suburban street. "He stayed with me because he was a parasite who needed my family's wealth to survive. And you are just a secondary parasite who failed to realize the host was already tracking the infection. The house is gone. The money is gone. And by tomorrow morning, the man you loved will be wearing a state-issued uniform that looks very similar to the one you ordered me to clean up after."

Without waiting for a response, Claire turned around and stepped back into her car, leaving Veronica standing alone on the pavement, completely destitute and utterly defeated as the moving van drove away.
