Chapter 6 - The Arrest

The arrest of Ethan Carter did not happen in a quiet office or a secluded hotel room. True to her promise to ensure absolute accountability, Claire’s legal team worked with the Dallas District Attorney to ensure the execution of the criminal warrant occurred at the most public venue possible.

It was Wednesday afternoon, the day of the annual Dallas Business Council Gala—an event that Ethan had spent months preparing for back when he was still the celebrated CEO of Carter Holdings. He had retained a temporary visitor’s pass from a corrupt contact in the council administration, desperately hoping to use the event to network with old investors and salvage his reputation.

Ethan stood in the grand lobby of the luxury hotel where the gala was being held, wearing his finest tuxedo. He was trying to speak with a prominent real estate mogul, but the man was visibly uncomfortable, trying to find an excuse to walk away.

"Listen, Frank," Ethan pleaded, his voice carrying a frantic, desperate edge. "The media reports are completely exaggerated. My legal team is filing a countersuit tomorrow. It’s just a standard corporate restructuring dispute. If you can back my new investment firm with a five-hundred-thousand-dollar short-term loan, I can guarantee a twenty percent return within—"

"Mr. Carter," a deep, authoritative voice interrupted him from behind.

Ethan turned around, his words dying in his throat. Standing there was Detective Ramirez of the Dallas Financial Crimes Unit, flanked by three uniformed police officers. Right behind them stood Claire, looking stunning in a midnight-blue evening gown, accompanied by Naomi Reed and the entire executive board of Carter Holdings.

The bustling chatter in the grand lobby dropped to a complete, absolute silence as hundreds of the city's most prominent business leaders turned to watch the scene unfold.

"Ethan Carter," Detective Ramirez said loudly, producing a red-stamped warrant document. "I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the State of Texas for multiple felony counts, including first-degree grand larceny, identity theft, secure document forgery, and corporate bank fraud."

Ethan’s face went from pale to a deep, humiliating crimson. He looked around the room, seeing the expressions of disgust, pity, and mockery on the faces of the people who had cheered for him just a month ago.

"This is ridiculous!" Ethan hissed, trying to keep his voice down as he took a step back. "Detective, please. Let’s handle this outside. I am a major contributor to the police foundation. I know the chief."

"The chief signed the execution order himself, Mr. Carter," Detective Ramirez replied coldly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

One of the uniformed officers stepped forward, grabbing Ethan’s arm. The sharp, mechanical click of the steel handcuffs echoing off the marble walls of the luxury hotel lobby sounded like a definitive gunshot closing the chapter on his career.

Ethan struggled against the grip, his expensive tuxedo jacket wrinkling as his wrists were secured. He glared at Claire, his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl of pure rage. "You did this to me! You setup this whole thing! You're a vindictive, hateful bitch, Claire! You hear me? You're nothing without my name!"

Claire walked forward slowly, stopping exactly three feet in front of him. The entire room held its breath, expecting an emotional outburst. Instead, Claire simply reached out, straightened the crooked silk bowtie around his neck, and offered a calm, serene smile that radiated absolute victory.

"Your name is officially removed from my registry, Ethan," Claire whispered, her voice carrying perfectly to the first few rows of spectators. "And as for who I am without you... I am the sole owner of Carter Holdings, the master of the Hale estate, and the woman who just cleared the trash out of this city. Have a safe ride to the county jail."

The officers marched Ethan through the center of the ballroom lobby, his head lowered as the flashes of dozens of media cameras captured his absolute downfall for the front page of the morning news.
